Nihon fukeiron (Japanese Landscape), written by Shiga Shigetaka (1863-1927), a journalist and geographer, is widely recognized as his most representative geographical text and also one of his most controversial works. The debate centres on whether his purpose in broadening his contemporaries' understanding of Japan's natural environment was educational or imperialistic. Shiga is known among scholars of Japanese modern intellectual history as the pioneering advocate of kokusui shugi (maintenance of Japan's cultural identity) in the face of increasing pressure from the West in the late 1880s. He perceived that the traditional Japanese elements that were so much a part of the lives of the Japanese people had their foundation in geography. This paper demonstrates that his immediate goal in praising Japan's geography was to arouse national awareness and pride and to alert his countrymen to Japan's position in the fast-changing world order. Furthermore, Nihon fu ¥ keiron was a rational geographic treatise and a travelogue in the Western style that suggested a new way of viewing the Japanese landscape. It was his attempt to express the abstract concept of kokusui in a more practical way and to provide concrete evidence of Japan's 'excellence and uniqueness'.

This article investigates the relational nature of globalization between Japan and Britain, and addresses Japanization in this context. Japanization, defined as Japanese influence on UK management styles (particularly in the area of production management), will be examined through three case studieswhich illustrate the context of Japanization in terms of the convergence of British management towards human resource management (HRM). Hallmarks of Japanization are methods and techniques of production management which overlap with those of HRM. It is also significant that the diffusion of Japanization and HRM in Britain took place concurrently, leading to the conclusion that Japanization and HRM represent a synergistic relationship of managerial strategy, on the one hand, offering suitable conditions for Japanization, and, on the other, the enhanced diffusion of HRM in Britain through Japanization. This paper also examines how British academics have reflected Japanization in their research. In this way, it is also possible to pinpoint the influence of Japanese techniques and methods effective for production management. Although Japanization and HRM overlap both in content and period of diffusion, in the long term Japanization may be considered as an integral part of the general diffusion of HRM in Britain.

Shindō Kaneto's films Kuroneko and Onibaba create original embodiments of a traditional Japanese ritualistic pattern of a human being vanquishing a demonic threat. In Kuroneko real female demonic creatures use a male's sexual desire to realize their revenge, but are eventually vanquished. At first glance this film appears to be merely a relatively superior example of the ‘monstrous cat films’ (kaibyō eiga), a very popular genre in the 1950s and 1960s, and one that only superficially reflected the more existential traditional meaning of the ritualistic demonic pattern. However, Shindō synergizes several narrative parts taken from the traditional theatre to create a unique and complex narrative for this film, which is not found as such in the traditional theatre. In Onibaba, Shindō innovatively explores the demonic pattern through one character who uses a certain element of this tradition as a disguise – a plot device – but then becomes inextricably drawn into the pattern itself: a female character uses a demonic mask in an attempt to prevent the uncontrollable sexual passion of another woman for a man whom she herself passionately desires, but she is gradually absorbed into the mask itself, and eventually vanquished. In both films Shindō uses traditional elements of space, mask, make-up, objects and movements.

Abstract This article surveys travel and other literature to trace the Japanese discovery of New Zealand. The literature is viewed as a kind of contact-zone literature, in which New Zealand is a place where, at least psychologically, Japanese expansionist ambitions encounter British expansionism. Themes taken up in the article include, in order of appearance, British colonial enterprise as an object lesson; views of new-world social structures; the anxiety of empire; increasingly critical views of ignorance about Japan; and the place of the white South Pacific in a Japan-led Co-Prosperity Sphere. The article concludes with a special focus on representations of the Maori and how these reflect developing Japanese views of Japan's place in the Pacific.

Abstract I expose the ambiguous relationship between the seduction of the surface and the obsession with the depth in the three versions of The Face of Another—the film, the screenplay, and the novel—by looking at functions and effects of the face, not to compare these registers but to see the way they cross-reference each other in order to form themselves. I first examine references to film in the novel and show how analogous film and the face are to each other in the reconfiguration of the binary between the substance and the surface. I then discuss cinematic modifications of two significant negotiations of the man with the face of another, with the doctor and with the wife, which suggests the genre's unique position vis-à-vis Western metaphysics. Finally, I sketch gender-bending with respect to the artificial face, complicating the depth/surface dialectic that has traditionally been ascribed to the woman. The dichotomy between the surface and the substance reveals itself in this story of obsession with the face, and in the medium of film that projects images onto the surface.

Abstract Recent scholarship, led by several Japanese economic historians, has offered new perspective on Asian economic history. They argue that the economic growth of Asian countries was led by the intra‐Asian trade which began to grow rapidly around the turn of the century. On the other side, prominent British imperial historians, P. J. Cain and A. G. Hopkins present a provocative thesis, ‘Gentlemanly capitalism and British expansion overseas’, in which they emphasise the leading role of service sectors rather than that of British industry for reassessing the nature of British expansion overseas. The purpose of this paper is to reconsider the British attitude to Japan and China at the turn of the century in the light of these important historiographical revisions in Great Britain as well as in Japan. By this stage, Japan had achieved an impressive economic growth, or a rapid industrialisation. The traditional view has been that Britain and other Great Powers had generally discouraged industrialisation in the non‐European world and that Japan had achieved industrialisation by reacting to the Western encroachment or the Western impact. In this paper, I shall argue rather that there was a recognised sense of complementarity between British and Japanese economic and political interests, which encouraged Japanese industrialisation, and that the interest of the City of London played an important role in setting out an economic and political framework under which it took place. I shall explore several kinds of complementary relationships between the UK and Japanese industrialisation around the turn of the century, including those relating to China. The primary sources on which I shall draw are British Diplomatic and Consular Reports on Japan and China from 1895 to 1913.

By relating the stamp issues made during the period 1937-89 to the changing Japanese political environment, this paper identifies themes in their designs which involve attempts by government to redefine Japanese national identity and Japan's desired role in the world. The paper suggests why certain other themes, which might have been expected to be prominent, were virtually missing from these stamp issues. The roles of politicians, civil servants and artists/designers in the creation of designs are described. The problems of analysing images on stamps for their social significance, involving theories of symbolism and semiotics aswell as of the anthropology of art, are briefly explored and the choices made for this analysis of their apparent themes are explained. Before the extent and nature of their social agency can be properly assessed, this research needs to be extended to include assessments of how the users of these postage stamps, both in Japan and abroad, interpret and act on their designs. It is also noted that, as a result of stamps becoming a part of material culture, there is a different social agency in their collection which further research may show results in new forms of social bonding.
