The figure of the prisoner, particularly as associated with the Numbers gangs in South African prison gangs, is both a hyper-masculine and (homo-)eroticized character. Prison allows for a state of being queer that, through its subject having already been criminalised, and escapes the stigma of feminization associated with it in the hierarchically gendered society outside of prison. Through the structure of the gang and in the confines of the prison, same-sex desire is at the centre of criminality and masculinity. At the same time, prison allows a space in which same-sex desire is countenanced; it thus becomes a literary setting fraught with same-sex eroticism. This essay considers the extent to which the masculinities of prison have become conflated with notions of an eroticized homosexual threat and the politics and fates of such threat inside and outside the jail walls. It reads a film (Proteus, 2003), non-fiction text (The Number, 2010, by Jonny Steinberg), short fiction (by Jan van Tonder), and play (Tertius Kapp’s Rooiland, 2013).  相似文献

Abstract

In this article, I study the journey of the Finland-Swedish author Monika Fagerholm’s (b. 1961) novel The American Girl to the pages of O, The Oprah Magazine. This event, here called “Fagerholm goes Oprah”, offers an illustrative example of the global movements of literature today, and of the ongoing negotiation of relations between local and global, the Nordic countries and the USA, minor literature and the global market. The article describes the different phases of the transmission of this novel, studies the means by which a novel from a minor body of literature transgresses its geo-linguistic position and, in this specific case, demonstrates the role of gender. In this way, the novel not only creates fictive, transnational spaces for its female characters and readers, but it also enters and contributes to a network of female agents in widely different geographical and cultural contexts. The event “Fagerholm goes Oprah” is a sign of the ongoing globalization of the literary field, but its reception also reveals the presence of an opposing tendency: the continuing significance of localization in literary exchange. All in all, the novel and its reception illustrate the many strategies used to create a connection between two different cultures, and also display the importance of various cultural currents in the transmission of the novel, such as feminism and Nordic Noir.  相似文献

Ibuse Masuji and Inoue Mituharu are two active post-war literary writers of Japan and received great attention all because of their works with the theme of Nuclear. Neither of them has experienced the radiation exposure, but respectively created Black Rain and Saikai Nuclear Power Station. F. R. Kreutzwald introduced the Estonian national epic Kalevipoeg (1861) as genuine folklore, overshadowing his own prevalent role in its creation: the problems of genre and authorship persist in the text. Firstly, Kalevipoeg was shaped by the poetics of romantic balladry. This can be proved by its author’s devotion to the ballad; in addition, many a lyro-epic folk song has been integrated into Kalevipoeg. Thus, a ballad-like lyro-dramatical-epical structure bears upon the work which gave rise to a new form: the lyro-epic epic. Secondly, a complex cluster of authorship can be extracted from Kalevipoeg: personal, fictional, intertextual, and discursive authorships.  相似文献

大国文学需要自我身份反省并坚持文论走近经典进而可持续创新。在中国文论经历了一个世纪的西化浪潮之后,应该重新检讨中国文论的精神价值取向,从全盘西化的文论盲视中走出来,重新以“走近经典”的文化高度和精神厚度,审视大众图像时代中的中国文论身份,从西方文论的中国化到中国文论经验的世界化的转型中,关注文化创新与文学理论创新的同步性,进而守正创新——“走近经典”并“创新经典”。  相似文献

在马克思主义文论中国化的历史进程中,20世纪30年代“左联”所倡导的“文艺大众化”从文艺的形式与内容、作家立场、社团组织、实践功能等方面探讨了文艺如何大众化,促进了马克思主义文论中国化的发展,在中国特定语境中推动了马克思主义“文艺人民性”话语形式的孕育。20世纪30年代“文艺大众化”也展现了文艺突围中马克思主义文论中国化艰难探索的过程,体现出对马克思主义文论中国化系统化、共识性理论方略的追求,但由于理论论争不彻底等因素,影响了话语表现的不同意见。但从思潮史、理论史的角度而言,20 世纪 30年代“文艺大众化”对马克思主义“文艺人民性”话语的孕育,对马克思主义文论中国化的历史迈进仍然具有积极的理论价值。  相似文献
