Cultural Policy,Literature and Readership in Revolutionary Cuba: The View from the 21st Century

This article presents a fresh perspective on cultural policy in revolutionary Cuba, focusing specifically on the centrality of dialogue with the general readership to the production, reception and regulation of literature. It first summarises the positions regarding revolutionary literature that have been asserted and essayed at various points along the sometimes chaotic trajectory of revolution in Cuba. It then examines reading-related policies and recent attempts within Cuba to re-orient reading practices in the aftermath of the Período Especial [Special Period], and ends by presenting current Cuban debates on the need to mitigate dialogic breakdown between literary text and readership.

Fatal (F)laws: Law, Literature and Writing

In this article, we develop an account of judgment as writing which displaces and contests the conventional staging of the signifiers ‘law’ and ‘literature’. If judgment is understood as writing, then it is opened out onto the contexts which structure it, but which it must disavow or repress. To investigate this process, we read the judicial judgment of a killing of a gay man. In this text, the context that is simultaneously cited and repressed is that of literature - and specifically, Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare. Literature functions not as law's other in this judgment, but as a legal concept. Its chief performative effect is the concealment of a corpse: literature enables law to forget the wounds of the murdered man, and to bury his corpse within the grammar of fate. Our reading is an attempt to illuminate the scene of this crime. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Literature from the Periphery of São Paulo at the Buenos Aires International Book Fair

This article analyzes the participation of São Paulo as guest of honor at the Buenos Aires International Book Fair (2014). We will examine why the event's curators opted to take writers from the saraus, poetry readings on the city's outskirts, to the Fair, as well as the political arrangements that made the participation of those writers possible. We also discuss why participation in Buenos Aires was so different from that promoted by the federal government for other events, like the Frankfurt Book Fair (2013), where curators prioritized authors with greater prestige or international exposure.     

史官文化与中国文学民族性的确立

我国古代长期处在宗法式农业经济的社会形态里,史官文化的影响极其深远。这对中国文学的基本性质和发展行程起到了重要的定位作用,以致中国文学从观念到体制都体现了一种独特的民族性。一方面,史官文化以社会政教人伦为本位,崇尚立德保民,它在价值导向上规定了中国文学尤其注重政治教化功能。另一方面,由于史官文化自身的学术包容性,使得中国文学在发展过程中,始终处于文学与非文学因素相互交织的状态,形成了一种独特的杂文学体制。此外,史官文化还促成了中国文学所特有的文学史观的孕育和萌生,即将文学的历史发展与时代政治的兴衰密切联系起来考察,从史的角度追溯文学源流与圣王之道的关系,以确立文学的政治教化统绪。可以说,中国传统的文学、文学观、文学史观和文学体制,无不显现着史官文化理性精神的涵盖。     

形式本体论:新时期文艺的价值取向

形式本体论是新时期中国文艺从实践到理论都曾积极追求过的价值取向之一.这一文艺思潮首先表现在作家的创作实践层面,然后是文学批评家们的形式批评,最后上升为文艺理论家们的文艺形式本体理论的建构,这一思潮自有其产生的合理原因,也有其不足.

中国古代文论的现代性转换,并不是要西化,绝不能离开民族特色这个根,而是要在古代文论与现代文论的融通中实现转换,比如言志抒情理论的延伸与转换、意境理论的发展与运用、文艺社会功能的拓展及其特殊性、神思妙悟式艺术思维的肯定等.
