Where Love Flies Free

SUMMARY

Several definitions of “home,” drawn from dozens provided by the Oxford Dictionary of the English Language underscore how a large urban county jail becomes many forms of home for the women detainees there. Drawing on the women's poetry and the mechanics of creative writing workshops facilitated by the author for the last seven years at Cook County Jail, this essay describes some of the realities of the criminal (injustice system and how the women's writing becomes a way of writing against the grain of official discourse, thus altering certain definitions of this “home.”     

Can there be Costless War? Violent Exposures and (In)Vulnerable Selves in Benjamin Percy's "Refresh,Refresh"

Abstract

The technological transformation of the conduct of war, exemplified by the American employment of drones in Afghanistan and in Iraq, calls for a critical reflection about the fantasies that underpin, and are in turn animated by, the robotic revolution of the military. At play here is a fantasy of a "costless war" or a "sterile war", that is such act of military state violence against the other that is inconsequential for the self. In other words, the seductive appeal of the "costless war" fantasy rests on the desire to develop a self that is invulnerable in the face of violence. Importantly, it is a desire explicitly projected towards a particular American future (of an imagined warfare, or of a super-power status), but also one that is connected to a lacking critical reflection about the intersubjective aspects of violence in the debates about America's post-9/11 military involvements. This article reflects critically about the fantasy of the "costless war" and about its underpinning politics of invulnerability from a perhaps unlikely angle of literature. In a close reading of a short story by Benjamin Percy called "Refresh, Refresh" (2008), it explores its narrative insights into how acts of violence, which are undertaken far from home, inevitably return to affect and damage, perhaps beyond repair, the subject at home. Importantly, the return of violence in Percy's story occurs within the domain of the everyday and the mundane, not of the exceptional, and testifies to the despair experienced by young males "abandoned' by their military fathers. My interpretation draws also on theoretical explorations of the connection between violence, intersubjectivity and vulnerability, based on the ideas of Emmanuel Levinas on the subject's ethical captivity by the suffering of the other, and on Judith Butler's recent "uses" of the Levinasian ethical project in her writing about the post-9/11 America.

厉鹗与朱彝尊“清空”词风之差异及文化探源

"清空"被清代浙派词家标为艺术至境,对"清空"艺术的追求,在不同作家手中呈现为不同的风貌.中期的宗主和巨匠厉鹗在审美趣味上偏好"孤淡",取境萧疏,意象冷寂,用字寒瘦,形成清幽冷峭的特色;浙派早期领袖朱彝尊则趋向"傅采",形成深情绵缈的风格.这是由于二人在性情品操、生平经历、爱情生活、文化底蕴等方面的差异造成的.从浙派"雅正"、"清空"的论词标准看,樊榭词才是其真正代表.

"天人合一"是中国一个古老的哲学命题,它在我们民族性中根深蒂固地沉淀着,对中国古代文学的影响巨大,最显要处莫过于唐代以前的历史时期,影响主要有三方面:逆天不祥、指天而呼、天(神)人合体.

African being and cultural project

This article examines aspects of African culture seen as projects from an existentialist perspective and seeks to make a robust contribution to African studies and in particular interdisciplinary African studies. It offers a focus on the interiorisation of African cultural project-as-text as an upsurge of being; interiorisation(s) of being projects of African being and consciousness. This study on African subjectivity situates the African cultural constituency within a specific existentialist schematic: the African for itself in the form of cultural project-as-text, a reflective black consciousness, the black ‘I’ or African being-with-others in the form of cultural projects-as-texts, a self-reflective conscious of black consciousness, the black ‘we’-subject, ‘us’, and lastly African being-for-ourselves Black existentialist philosophy is predicated on the liberation of all black people from oppression.     

Garros-Evdokimov and Commodification of the Baltics

Recent groundbreaking analyses of the Baltics have focused on decolonization and national and postcolonial subjectivity. A related but somewhat divergent approach to postcolonial, ethnic and global studies in the Baltic context is to explore the response of contemporary Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian cultures to the introduction of consumer capitalism, intra-European community and global pop-culture. A long-awaited independence brought by the Soviet departure has also presented the Baltics with multiple novel challenges, especially the issue of establishing a new identity, on both a national and a personal level. These challenges become the focus of Headcrusher (2003), the debut novel of Latvian-Russian journalists Alexander Garros and Alexei Evdokimov. This essay investigates Headcrusher's fictionalization of Latvian entry into global commodified space and contextualizes the novel's censure of the new consumer-driven realm within a broader Western comparative literary and theoretical perspective.     

比较文学视阈下的中国俄罗斯文学研究（1978-2017）

自俄罗斯文学进入我国学者的视野起,比较文学即被应用于其研究当中。特别是20世纪90年代以来,比较文学更是以其跨文化性和开放性的特点为我国的俄罗斯文学研究带来了较为丰硕的成果。但是,相较于比较文学在其他国别文学研究中的应用,我国学者在中俄文学关系、俄罗斯文学的中国形象建构研究等问题的研究中,存在着研究思路与话语陈旧、方法运用生硬刻板、中国学者的主体性意识与民族立场弱化、具有国际影响力的高质量成果欠缺等一系列问题。此外,我国学者编撰的俄罗斯文学史著作也折射出其在世界文学眼光与比较文学意识方面存在的欠缺。     

论中国文艺美学的古今对接之途

中国学人建构的美学体系和开展的美学研究,不能离开中国古典的丰富资源和经验。从问题、范畴、概念入手,探讨其古今对接的可能性的具体、个案研究尤为需要。宏观上的中国古典美学的现代价值建设要奠基于对那些通向现代的古典文艺美学范畴、概念系列的成功清理。
