Research Summary: The present experimental study examined parole outcomes and arrests for 1,958 California Youth Authority parolees, randomly assigned to levels of routine drug testing ranging from “no testing” to two tests per month. Results showed no improved outcomes from more frequent drug testing. Early positive drug tests, however, indicated increased risk of recidivism. Policy Implications: Although limited in its scope, this study provided experimental evidence that little crime‐reduction benefit of routine drug testing above a minimum level exists for regular parolees. However, drug testing may serve as a relatively straightforward risk assessment procedure for future criminal behavior.

Using an integration of social control theory and the routine activity perspective, adolescent time use was examined for effects
on problem behaviors. We examined a wide variety of time use categories, including homework, extracurricular activities, sports
time, alone time, paid work, housework, television watching, as well as indices of family time and peer time, for their effects
on heavy alcohol use, cigarette smoking, illicit drug use, delinquency and sexual activity. The study employed a representative
household sample of adolescents (n=606) and took into account important sociodemographic factors – gender, age, race (Black and White), and socioeconomic status.
The most important predictors of adolescent problem behaviors were family time and peer time. Family time serves as a protective
factor against all five problem behaviors while peer time is a highly significant risk factor for all five problem behaviors.

Prior studies have examined the influence of neighborhood perceptions on youth outcomes, but few studies have examined whose
report of neighborhoods, parents’ or youths,’ are most important in predicting youth outcomes. This study addresses the relative
associations of youths’ and mothers’ neighborhood perceptions with youth alcohol use and delinquency. The sample includes
499 mother-child dyads (youth age: 10 to 16 [mean=13.3; SD=2]). Structural equation modeling showed that youths’ perceived neighborhood problems were significantly associated with
their delinquency but not their alcohol use. However, mothers’ perceived neighborhood problems were not related to either
youth alcohol use or delinquency, suggesting that youths’ perceptions are better indicators of youth behavior. Youth reports
may reflect their activities in the neighborhood and their exposure to different forms of deviance, so youths’ reports would
be better indicators of exposure to neighborhood risk. Challenges for prevention are discussed.

psychosocial and environmental factors influencing youth
problem behaviors.
Interests are interventions for children with substance use or externalizing problems and their families.
She is currently conducting alcohol, drug and other risky behavior prevention studies that include a focus on young adults
in club settings as well as a variety of different family-based studies in different geographic regions (San Francisco Bay
Area, Alaska, Thailand).
Her work integrates both quantitative and qualitative research methods and centers on alcohol and other drug use, and related
health issues among adolescents and young adults. She is especially interested in applying theoretical models of socially
learned behaviors to populations with different cultural and social backgrounds 相似文献

Based on evidence that early antisocial behavior is a key risk factor for delinquency and crime throughout the life course,
early family/parent training, among its many functions, has been advanced as an important intervention/prevention effort.
There are several theories concerning why early family/parent training may cause a reduction in child behavior problems including
antisocial behavior and delinquency (and have other ancillary benefits in non-crime domains over the life course). The prevention
of behavior problems is one of the many objectives of early family/parent training, and it comprises the main focus of this
review. Results indicate that early family/parent training is an effective intervention for reducing behavior problems among
young children, and the weighted effect size was 0.35. The results from a series of analog to the analysis of variance (ANOVA)
and weighted least squares regression models (with random effects) demonstrated that there were significant differences in
the effect sizes of studies conducted in the USA versus those conducted in other countries and that studies that were based
on samples smaller than 100 children had larger effect sizes. Sample size was also the strongest predictor of the variation
in the effect sizes. Additional evidence indicated that early family/parent training was also effective in reducing delinquency
and crime in later adolescence and adulthood. Overall, the findings lend support for the continued use of early family/parent
training to prevent behavior problems. Future research should test the main theories of early family/parent training and detail
more explicitly the causal mechanisms by which early family/parent training reduces delinquency and crime, and future evaluations
should employ high quality designs with long-term follow-ups, including repeated measures of antisocial behavior, delinquency,
and crime over the life course.

Changes in the family structure can be very disruptive to adolescents who live in those families. This article examines the
impact of the number of family transitions on delinquent and drug-using behavior. Specifically, the effect of family transitions
is hypothesized to be mediated by problems within the family, school, and peer settings. A sample of 646 boys (73%) and girls
(27%) taken from a longitudinal panel study of high-risk adolescents are used to examine these hypotheses. For girls, little
support is found for the direct or the indirect effect of family transitions on delinquent behavior or drug use. For boys,
however, both forms of problem behavior are influenced by family transitions directly and indirectly through changes in, and
problems with, peer associations. The findings suggest that during times of family turmoil, the friendship network of adolescent
male children is also disrupted, leading to an increase in associations with delinquent others and, in turn, an increase in
problematic behaviors.
