Methods of sex trafficking: findings of a case study in Turkey

The underground sex industry in Turkey has increasingly become dependent on the foreign women, predominantly coming from the former Soviet Union. Some of these women became victims of sex trafficking. However, little is known about how they are recruited, transferred to, and exploited in Turkey. This article attempts to enlighten this process and makes use of police-recorded victim interviews (N?=?430), as well as key personnel interviews (N=?18) as primary data. Various methods and tactics are found to be used in sex trafficking operations in Turkey. Most victims are recruited by persons known to them proposing attractive job possibilities, especially in the entertainment business. The majority of victims enter Turkey with legal documents and with various transportation means. Traffickers obtain girls and sell them to customers in public and private settings using methods to control the victims, such as debt bondage, violence, confinement, confiscation of travel documents, and threats.     

(Re)Drawing the Lines on Marriage and Sexuality

The campaign for same‐sex marriage is animated by two, contradictory impulses: a libertarian‐egalitarian strain that continually expands the boundaries of what is publicly legitimate; and a conservative one that seeks to reinforce traditional boundaries. Democratic polities would benefit from public discussion on whether to retain normative, sexual boundaries, and if so, what they should reasonably be. I outline a moderately conservative agenda that would limit public legitimacy to sexually exclusive monogamy (heterosexual or homosexual), but informally tolerate most, consenting, nonconventional sexual practices. A spirit of humility, empathy and tragedy will help us to exercise reasonable judgement as we redraw the lines on marriage and sexuality.     

小城镇女性农民工性服务研究——以L市Y区为例

20世纪70年代末以来,商业性性服务在中国大陆重新蔓延,近十几年甚至在一些地方扩展成为一个严重的社会问题。本文在以往研究的基础上,从主体建构与社会性别视角出发,突出女性性服务者的主观感受,试图从她们的角度来解读她们眼中的性服务。在研究过程中,采用深度访谈的方法,从被调查者那里获得直接的第一手材料,对小城镇进城农村女性性服务者进行观照,并将这一群体放到整个妇女就业的全局中,考察这一群体的基本特征,考察她们为什么会进入性服务业,以及进入性服务业后的生活体验。最后,在调研的基础上提出了解决这一问题的几点建议。     

生态学马克思主义视阈中生态安全问题研究——从日本核危机切入

肇始于20世纪60～70年代的生态学马克思主义将生态学同马克思主义相结合,力图运用马克思主义分析和探寻当代世界,尤其是资本主义社会生态危机产生的根源及其解决途径,为我们解答生态安全问题提供了全新理论视角。由日本地震诱发的全球核危机让人们在为核泄露而惊恐的同时引起了诸多的环境伦理思考。解决生态问题,必须冲破技术异化的牢笼,摆脱“人类中心主义”抽象价值争论,走出狭隘的资本利益圈,超越偏执的消费主义生活方式,重新审视制度的正义性,把发展成果服务于人类整体利益,实现人与自然、人与社会、人与人的全面协调和谐发展。

CHANGE AND DISCONTINUITY: WAR AND AFGHANISTAN, 1904–1924

In the imaginations of many, war in British India had its focus on the North-West Frontier and was fought against the tribes of that region. However, British thinking about Indian defence involving Afghanistan underwent tremendous change over the period under consideration. British plans to meet a Russian invasion on the Kabul-Kandahar Line in 1904 resembled those of any other Nineteenth Century Imperial campaign, with numbers of infantry and cavalry still being thought of and referred to as bayonets and sabres. Twenty years later, heavily influenced by the experiences of the Great War in the region and the Third Afghan War and associated operations, the calculus was different with logistics changed by motor vehicles and the introduction of what today are referred to as force multipliers, such as aeroplanes and machine guns. It was over this period that warfare as fought and conceptualised by men like Napoleon gave way to modern practices familiar to us today.     

Freedom to Hate

ABSTRACT

River Run High School, located in rural west central Florida, was the site for a case study of student conflict precipitated by the wearing and display of Confederate flags on campus. Following a series of tense student encounters over Confederate and other racist symbols, a conflict resolution team was invited to intervene. Team members created a series of student dialogues involving the principal disputants. Conversations revealed the basis of the conflict emanated from misunderstandings over history, stereotypical views of different ethnic groups, and inadequate lines of communication. While acknowledging the role for creating a climate of respect among students on campus, legal precedents have established students' rights to freedom of speech and expression that protect unpopular ideas. Tension and conflict on campus over free speech can be mitigated through ongoing dialogues among diverse segments of the student population.     

网络传播背景下的青少年性越轨行为的研究

网络对于青少年的性越轨的影响可分为三个大类:性道德与性观念的冲击、网络色情文化的大肆传播及其影响、以网络为媒介的性越轨新现象的出现。依据传播学中“两级传播”理论与社会学中的社会化理论对性越轨行为的产生进行分析,从社会控制的角度提出了加强青少年网络性越轨控制的措施。     

简论胡瑗的“大中之道”

"中"是宋代理学家胡瑗理学思想的重要基础。纵观胡瑗的所有论述,无不显示其"中"的底蕴。他把"中"看着是"正"的前提,无论是谈自然,还是言人事,都离不开一个"中"字。胡瑗一方面继承了中庸之道,另一方面又发明创造,把中庸之道改造为他所说的具有辩证思想的"大中之道"。     

MARRIAGE IN CANADA—EVOLUTION OR REVOLUTION?*

On July 20, 2005, the Canadian Civil Marriage Act became law, extending equal access to civil marriage to same‐sex couples while respecting religious freedom. This article briefly traces the distinctive juridical factors that have contributed to the legislation: the constitutional comity or dialogue among Parliament, the courts and the people resulting from the constitutional entrenchment of a Charter of rights and freedoms; the growth of the substantive concept of equality in Canadian law; and the impact of the constitutional division of powers and the nature of Canadian federalism. Together, these factors contributed to a constructive debate centered on respect for diversity.
