Anecdotal evidence suggests an increase in entitled attitudes and behaviors of youth in school and college settings. Using
a newly developed scale to assess “academic entitlement” (AE), a construct that includes expectations of high grades for modest
effort and demanding attitudes towards teachers, this research is the first to investigate the phenomenon systematically.
In two separate samples of ethnically diverse college students comprised largely of East and Southeast Asian American, followed
by Caucasians, Latinos, and other groups (total N = 839, age range 18–25 years), we examined the personality, parenting, and motivational correlates of AE. AE was most strongly
related to exploitive attitudes towards others and moderately related to an overall sense of entitlement and to narcissism.
Students who reported more academically entitled attitudes perceived their parents as exerting achievement pressure marked
by social comparison with other youth and materially rewarding good grades, scored higher than their peers in achievement
anxiety and extrinsic motivation, and engaged in more academic dishonesty. AE was not significantly associated with GPA.

The current study provides new information on the etiology of adolescent problem behaviors in African American youth by testing
the importance of known predictors, namely parenting measures (monitoring, support, and communication), peers, and neighborhood
characteristics across rural and non-rural developmental contexts. More specifically, the study examined whether rural versus
non-rural developmental contexts moderated the relationships between known predictors and a variety of problem behaviors (alcohol
use, drug use, delinquency, and violence). Data were collected from N = 687 rural and N = 182 non-rural African American adolescents (mean age = 15.8 years). Findings indicate that both parenting constructs and
peer deviance had significant effects on problem behaviors and that these effects were consistent across rural and non-rural
developmental contexts. The study results are discussed in terms of their implications for ecological frameworks for testing
problem behavior etiology.

‘Supportive Parenting’, Responsibility and Regulation: The Welfare Assessment under the Reformed Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act (1990)

Section 13(5) of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 requires fertility clinics, before offering regulated treatment services, to take account of the welfare of any child who may be born as a result of the treatment and any other child affected by that birth. This paper presents the findings of an empirical study examining the impact on practice of the controversial reform of this section in 2008. While the broad values underpinning section 13(5) appear well embedded in clinic staff's engagement with ethical issues, there is little evidence that practice has been influenced by the 2008 amendments. A complex picture emerged regarding the implementation of section 13(5), particularly in its interaction with other factors, such as funding criteria and professional norms around counselling, implying a higher level of ongoing attention to likely parenting ability – particularly that of single women – than might be expected from a reading of the statute and guidance alone. 相似文献

The quality of the relationships that parents, particularly mothers, have with their children is a potent predictor of children’s
future development. Recent research suggests that mothers of preschool-age children exposed to domestic violence may be more
sensitive and responsive to their children than other parents. This heightened sensitivity and responsiveness in relationships
may be key to the successful development of some children exposed to domestic violence; however this theory remains unexplored.
The Canadian National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth provided a large sample size suitable for longitudinal analysis
of the relationship between exposure to family violence and parenting behaviors. Analysis revealed that mothers of children
exposed to domestic violence may indeed compensate for exposure to violence in their parenting interactions with their 2-
to 12-year-old children. 相似文献

This study purports that parental rejection and warmth are critical to the development of adolescent drug use, and investigates
a model that also considers children's vulnerability and deviant peer affiliations. It tests mediation through the proximal
risk factor of deviant peers. Poisson growth curve modeling was used to examine participants from the Canadian National Longitudinal
Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY; N=2194) over 4 waves. Results indicated that parental rejection was positively related to drug use, whereas parental warmth
was negatively related to it. Both effects were significant when child ADHD symptoms were taken into account. Parental rejection
and warmth had differential effects over time. Deviant peer affiliations were positively associated with drug use, did not
have a differential influence over time, and did not mediate the other effects. There was significant between-individual (level
2) variability in drug use. Results are discussed in light of adolescent perceptions of parent-child relationships.

It is increasingly common that children of divorce are geographically separated from one of their parents. This article considers the challenges that arise from that reality by exploring this problem from a variety of perspectives and by providing practical tips to minimize the impact of the distance. A review of the Ontario caselaw and Arizona Guidelines reveal that certain factors are important in the resolution of these disputes, including: the age of the child, mode of transportation between homes, distance, prior contact, and feasibility of virtual access. Court‐ordered access may include remedies that, absent the distance issue, may be considered extreme, including moving to overnight/extended access periods for young children, permitting children to travel unaccompanied, favoring the nonresident parent for holidays and vacation time, allowing children to decrease contact with the nonresident parent, and decreasing or terminating child support. Where distance dictates the in‐person and virtual access schedules, creative solutions are critical to the successful resolution of these cases. Forward thinking family law professionals can meaningfully help parents to achieve better outcomes for children. 相似文献

This article examines three think tanks sponsored by the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, which convened representatives of different disciplines, often with differing perspectives, to address policy and practice dilemmas in family law and dispute resolution. This essay was initially commissioned by the Nuffield Foundation, London, UK, as an Insight Article for its Family Justice Observatory, which aims to improve the use of data and research evidence in the family justice system in England and Wales. The think tank process is described and analyzed, identifying factors that created challenges and those that led to success. 相似文献

Maternal reports of 60 preschool-aged children were used to investigate trauma responses to living in households where domestic
violence was present. Post-trauma symptoms were measured using developmentally modified criteria based on the Child Behavior
Checklist (CBCL). Mothers’ level of anxiety, depression, somatization, and self-reported parenting stress were also assessed.
Results suggested that, in addition to clinical levels of Internalizing, Externalizing and Total Problem scores on the CBCL,
young children displayed a range of post-trauma symptoms. Mothers reported a high level of violence, and a significant relationship
was found between self-reported levels of distress and parenting stress. Parenting stress was found to be the strongest predictor
of children’s scores on the CBCL. Although domestic violence alone was not significantly correlated to child outcomes, results
indicated that maternal distress adversely impacted on the parent-child relationship. The importance of the child’s relationship
with the primary caregiver was discussed. Implications regarding further research, developmentally appropriate diagnostic
criteria, and early interventions with the primary caregiver are highlighted. 相似文献
