The Room and the Street: Gwen John’s and Jean Rhys’s Insider/Outsider Modernism

The modernist city is commonly thought of as a city of exteriors; we envision the ‘spaces of modernity’ as sites of industry or leisure, and apply the very notion of the ‘urban’—urban planning, urban studies—to the way we approach public spaces. But by reading together the paintings of Gwen John (1876–1939) and the writings of Jean Rhys (1890–1979), we discern a different modernist story than we are used to hearing—one that collapses divisions between the room and the street, the private and the public. By focusing on tropes of rooms in their works, the author seeks to nuance our understanding of John’s and Rhys’s relationship to community from within the supposed safety or isolation of their interior rooms, and argues more broadly for a women’s modernism of the city that collapses divisions between the room and the street, the private and the public. These two figures, who are usually read as ‘outsiders’ to mainstream modernist culture, produce a distinct ‘insider/outsider’ aesthetic which reveals them to be working not outside, but at the very heart of modernist experimentation.

The Context of Responsiveness: Resident Preferences,Water Scarcity,and Municipal Conservation Policy

The extent to which municipal policy is determined by the preferences of residents is a topic of growing importance. Recent work on the subject has challenged conventional wisdom and found that municipal policy is often, but not always, responsive to the ideology of residents. This paper takes up an important potential implication of these findings, exploring how resident ideology may interact with issue severity in the adoption of municipal policy. Hypotheses suggest that resident preferences will have the greatest effect in the presence of high issue severity and that issue severity will have the largest impact when residents have ideological preferences in line with policy solutions. I test hypotheses using municipal water rates, with models showing that the effects of resident ideology and water scarcity interact with each other to influence water conservation policy.

西周是中国早期国家的典型,探究西周国家安全思想对于丰富国家安全学科思想内涵、完善国家安全学理论体系、推动建设中国特色哲学社会科学有重大的理论价值与现实意义。国家安全学是一门整体性、综合性的实用型学科,从国家安全学理论视角出发研究西周国家安全思想,不仅能为中国古代安全思想史研究提供补充,也有助于为国家现实安全战略的制定提供思想资源。影响西周国家安全的要素涵盖自然与社会两大领域,包括地理位置、人口构成、土地制度、政治制度和社会制度。在对这几方面的认识基础之上,西周形成了以政治安全、军事安全和社会安全为核心的国家安全思想。政治安全思想包括“崇拜天神、祭祀祖先”,“礼以定序、乐以观和”;军事安全思想包括“以礼制戎、除恶务尽”,“统筹全局、重点部署”;社会安全思想包括“神道设教、伦常为纲”,“阴阳和谐、天下大同”。这些思想同属于一个整体的、相互联系的国家安全思想系统,丰富了总体国家安全观的理论内涵。     

Introduction

John King’s introduction to this section surveys the development of Latin American film studies in the UK over the past 25 years. All three papers explore the interplay between local and global factors in the development of Mexican cinema. Andrea Noble introduces the work of Carlos Monsiváis and discusses the role that early and Golden Age cinema played in the processes of modernisation in Mexico. Carlos Monsiváis pays particular attention to the image of the city in recent Mexican cinema, exploring the use of language and the depiction of sex. Geoffrey Kantaris offers a number of theoretical pathways into an exploration of contemporary cinema in Mexico, analysing how ideas of place and identity are disrupted by the crisis of the nation state in a globalised, postmodern world.
