Using Foucault's notion of governmentality, this paper argues that colonial governmentality in India sought to effect a new relationship between resources, population, and discipline. Drawing theoretical insights from the 'critical accounting literature' to bear on the regulation of economic activity in colonial India, the paper shows how the discursive practices of colonial governance, in particular the modalities of measurement, accounting, and classification, enabled the constitution of the 'economy'. Such statistical data generated as part of colonial administration opened up the possibility of a nationalist accounting of the exploitation of India by the colonial power.  相似文献

19世纪末20世纪初朝鲜时值东方朝贡体系与西方殖民体系冲突的风口浪尖,日本在多次挑战朝贡体系中心(唐、明)失败之后,于清末时期借助殖民体系的理念再次向朝贡体系发起进攻,最终打败清政府将朝鲜变成它的殖民地,此后日本不仅彻底摧毁了朝贡体系,还试图在东亚建立以它为轴心的殖民体系。在此背景下,李承晚及其领导的政府组织依赖美国,希望通过亲美外交来争取美国承认大韩民国临时政府以对抗日本和给予半岛独立。李承晚寄生于他国且通过外交而非武装斗争来呼求他国赐予国家独立的外交模式和独立思想属于依附外交与外交独立论的范畴。所谓依附外交即弱小国家在使用通信、说服、交涉、谈判甚至战争等多种方式对外行使主权来处理国家关系和参与国际事务时,无法依靠自身的力量或意志自主地维护国家利益及实施对外政策,而不得不靠依附于他国和部分地让渡国家利益来处理国家关系的一种外交模式。由于这一外交主体的非独立性或寄生性,其外交政策及其体现出的外交思想染有鲜明的依附性色彩,因此,本文将之界定为依附外交,该概念的理论基础来自依附论中对依附的界定。而李承晚的依附外交主要体现出依附与独立的关系,是一种政治依附,后果则是韩国通过依附式独立方式走向独立式依附。  相似文献

This article attempts to analyze the construction and maintenance of political legitimacy in North Korea through the lens of its state-produced films. After classifying North Korea’s regime as totalitarian, we then discuss the strategies of legitimation available given this classification, and highlight the importance of ideology therein. Next, we demonstrate the importance of film within North Korea’s ideological apparatus and thematically analyze six North Korean films dating from 1948-2006. From this analysis, we situate the social role of film in contemporary North Korea and argue that it will remain a crucial force amongst the country’s various attempts to maintain legitimacy.  相似文献

This paper examines how drug traffickers, enforcement, nationhood, and space are represented in illegal drug films. Drawing from a sample of films produced in the United States between 1916 and 2005, this paper examines several drug films in order to explore how past and contemporary films on illegal drugs reflect conventional ideologies about law and order, the nation, and imperialism. Censorship and illegal drug films that challenge and rupture conventional ideologies will also be discussed.  相似文献

In this article we compare the propensity to intermarry of various migrant groups and their children who settled in Germany, France, England, Belgium and the Netherlands in the post-war period, using a wide range of available statistical data. We try to explain different intermarriage patterns within the framework of Alba and Nee's assimilation theory and pay special attention to the role of religion, colour and colonial background. We therefore compare colonial with non colonial migrants and within these categories between groups with ‘European’ (Christian) and non-European (Islam, Hinduism) religions. First of all, religion appears to be an important variable. Migrants whose faith has no tradition in Western Europe intermarry at a much lower rate than those whose religious backgrounds correspond with those that are common in the country of settlement. The rate of ethnic endogamous marriages in Western Europe are highest in Hindu and Muslim communities, often regardless if they came as guest workers or colonial migrants. Whereas differences in religion diminish the propensity to intermarry, colour or ‘racial’ differences on the other hand seem to be less important. This is largely explained by the pre-migration socialisation. Furthermore, the paper argues that the attention to institutions, as rightly advocated by Richard Alba and Victor Nee, needs a more refined and layered elaboration. Institutions, often as barriers to intermarriage, do not only emanate from the receiving society, but also—be it less formalized—within migrant communities. Especially religions and family systems, but also organized nationalist feelings, can have a profound influence on how migrants think about endogamy. Finally, strong pressures to assimilate, often through institutionalized forms of discrimination and stigmatization, not only produce isolation and frustrate assimilation (with resulting low intermarriage rates), but can also stimulate assimilation by 'passing' mechanisms. These factors, together with a more comparative perspective, are not completely ignored in the new assimilation theory, but—as this study of Western European intermarriage patterns stresses—deserve to be included more systematically in historical and social scientist analyses.  相似文献
