Cloud Data Imager: A unified answer to remote acquisition of cloud storage areas

The pervasive availability of cheap cloud computing services for data storage, either as persistence layer to applications or as mere object store dedicated to final users, is remarkably increasing the chance that cloud platforms potentially host evidence of criminal activity. Once presented a proper court order, cloud providers would be in the best position for extracting relevant data from their platforms in the most reliable and complete way. However, this kind of services are not so widespread to date and, therefore, the need to adopt a structured and forensically sound approach calls for innovative weaponry which leverage the data harvesting capabilities offered by the low level program interfaces exposed by providers. This paper describes the concepts and internals of the Cloud Data Imager Library, a mediation layer that offers a read only access to files and metadata of selected remote folders and currently supports access to Dropbox, Google Drive and Microsoft Skydrive storage facilities. A demo application has been build on top of the library which allows directory browsing, file content view and imaging of folder trees with export to widespread forensic formats.     

Misuse of private information as a tort: The implications of Google v Judith Vidal-Hall

The Court of Appeal in the recent decision of Google Inc v Judith Vidal Hall¹ has made a number of remarkable rulings in the area of privacy. An important aspect of this decision is that it clarified the legal foundation in which an action for unauthorised disclosure of private information is found. However, the decision itself is not without flaws. This paper seeks to analyse potential problems with the action being classified as a tort as well as the scope of misuse of private information being a form of privacy protection.

This article examines the Advocate-General's comments on the ‘hosting’ provision in the eCommerce Directive (00/31/EC). He suggests the existence of a ‘neutrality’ principle in respect of intermediary liability, which operates irrespective of an intermediary's knowledge about the legality or otherwise of the hosted content. This article critically examines this suggestion within the broader debate about the role and responsibilities of intermediaries in a cyberspace context.     

The Unexpected Effects of No Pass,No Drive Policies on High School Education

Since 1988, 27 states have introduced No Pass, No Drive laws, which tie a teenager's ability to receive and maintain a driver's license to various school-related outcomes—most commonly, enrollment and attendance. Enrollment-Based No Pass, No Drive policies, in 21 states, target both enrollment and attendance, and have negligible effects on dropout rates. However, these policies decrease the Averaged Freshman Graduation Rate (AFGR) by between 1 and 1.7 percentage points. This lower graduation rate stems from students delaying their dropout decision by up to two years. As a result, these students are retained in the ninth and tenth grades, increasing 9th-grade enrollment by 3.6 percent relative to 8th-grade enrollment the year prior; this causes an artificial reduction in the graduation rate, rather than a reduction in the true likelihood that a student will graduate. Truancy-Based No Pass, No Drive policies, in five states, target only attendance—teens that fail to meet a minimum attendance requirement lose their driver's license. However, these policies allow students to drop out of school without facing this penalty. These policies increase the annual dropout rate by between 23 and 34 percent (1 to 1.6 percentage points).

委托——代理关系是现代社会的一种常态，是社会分工的必然产物。在委托代理框架下，国有企业及其内部管理层具有身份上的二重性和人格上的矛盾复杂性，国企改革的核心就是要克服这种身份上的二重性和人格上矛盾复杂性交织在一起的负面影响，在既定的外部条件下，关键就是要改善和优化国企内部委托——代理关系来激活国企活力。建立在委托代理理论基础上，分析西藏国企内部激励机制的现状及其产生的原因，并在参照国内其他地区国企改革经验基础上，提出优化西藏国企内部激励机制的构想。     

基于数据驱动建模的毒情预测方法研究

数据驱动建模是一种非因果关系建模方法,针对传统回归模型依赖于经验,含有主观和盲目因素的问题,在模型设定阶段不需要一个以既有理论(或假说)为支持的理论模型,通过对数据结构的分析,依据数据自身的变化规律,利用外推机制描述时间序列数据的变化,从而有效解决数据量较少、预测模型拟合精度较低的问题,由此提供了一条普遍适用的建模思路。

In 2003, Google made available in Belgium its online free service “Google News”, which consisted in offering Internet users a computer-generated press review. In his orders of 5 September 2006 (previously commented in [2007] 23 CLSR 82–85) and of 13 February 2007 (previously commented in [2007] 23 CLSR 290–293) the President of the High Court of Brussels found that, by offering this service, Google infringed the copyrights of Belgian press editors and authors. On 5 May 2011, the Brussels Court of Appeal upheld to a very large extent the first instance decision. The Court confirmed that Google’s “cache” function and its “Google News” service were infringing the claimants’ copyrights and that Google could not rely on any copyright limitation (such as the exceptions for quotation or for report on news events), legislation or fundamental right.
