Techno-cultural opportunities: the anti-immigration movement in the Finnish mediascape

ABSTRACT

Horsti's article analyses how transformations in the media environment shaped the political success of the anti-immigration movement in Finland from 2003 to 2013. The qualitative textual analysis of blogs and mainstream media debates that relate to racism and the national populist Finns Party demonstrates how changes in the mediascape in general and in new media technology in particular have provided opportunities for the emerging anti-immigration movement. These changes facilitated the earlier development of the Finns Party but the fragmentation of online space later hindered the internal coherence of the movement and its integration into the populist party political family. In order to regain unity, the Finns Party performed the public scapegoating of individuals for racist speech, thus distancing itself from racism. Horsti shows that, rather than being isolated and marginal, the anti-immigration movement and the ‘uncivil’ public sphere overlap with traditional politics and the mainstream media.     

Trust in the clouds

The “cloud” is not new, and its roots go back to the original plans for computing from the 1950s. Now that computing is moving back to the original cloud-based models that were envisioned more than 60 years ago, with it, consumers are realizing the increases in security and safety that accompany the move to centralized servers. Yet the perception of “trust” in this context is often still formed by views that people have from their use of computers over the past two decades, which is localized in nature (“if I can see it, I can control it”). This view is based on perception more than fact. Our paper discusses different views of trust in other contexts (such as banking and travel) and concludes that users of cloud computing should recast their view of trust in a similar way that consumers of banking and travel have changed their perceptions of trust in the last 100 years.

Undiagnosed, untreated acute promyelocytic leukemia presenting as a suspicious sudden death

Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is a subtype of acute myelogenous leukemia frequently associated with clotting abnormalities and severe hemorrhagic diathesis. The disease is associated with a high incidence of early fatal hemorrhage. We report the sudden death of a 40-year-old male without significant medical history in which foul play had been initially suspected. A thorough postmortem investigation performed on the decedent lead to the diagnosis of APL. Cause of death was a cerebellar hematoma. Underlying APL should be considered in the differential diagnosis when unexplained bleeding is encountered in a decedent. This case emphasizes the value of routinely collecting bone marrow during an autopsy to enable accurate testing and diagnosis.     

Creative podcasting as a tool for legal knowledge and skills development

ABSTRACT

This article draws on the authors’ experience of introducing a student-led legal podcast in their law school in September 2017 to explore creative podcasting’s potential as a tool of legal knowledge and skills development. Drawing on the authors’ observations as the coordinators of the podcast, as well as a survey conducted amongst student participants, it considers the value of creative podcasting as a means of enhancing legal knowledge, aiding skills development, and fostering a feeling of collaboration and community. The article also reflects on the practical challenges associated with running a project of this type outside the school’s curriculum, focusing particularly on the challenge of encouraging student buy-in.     

试析三岩社会的农牧二元经济

为克服土地资源的不足,三岩峡谷历史地形成了农业与牧业两种生产方式并存的经济结构。农牧并举的二元经济结构也在很大程度上影响了三岩峡谷内部的社会及文化。与土地相关的一系列技术与文化成为当地的文化核心,而其他的文化要素都根源于三岩人使用土地的技术。由此导致三岩的二元结构并没有与社会的阶序化相结合,也没有形成人群之外的二元划分,而是始终依附于特定生态与自然环境以及与此相适应的血缘群体。

Hierarchical Cluster Analysis of Ignitable Liquids Based on the Total Ion Spectrum

Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) data of ignitable liquids in the Ignitable Liquids Reference Collection (ILRC) database were processed to obtain 445 total ion spectra (TIS), that is, average mass spectra across the chromatographic profile. Hierarchical cluster analysis, an unsupervised learning technique, was applied to find features useful for classification of ignitable liquids. A combination of the correlation distance and average linkage was utilized for grouping ignitable liquids with similar chemical composition. This study evaluated whether hierarchical cluster analysis of the TIS would cluster together ignitable liquids of the same ASTM class assignment, as designated in the ILRC database. The ignitable liquids clustered based on their chemical composition, and the ignitable liquids within each cluster were predominantly from one ASTM E1618‐11 class. These results reinforce use of the TIS as a tool to aid in forensic fire debris analysis.     

为什么我们没有“新闻法”———反思我国新闻传播立法研究

我国改革开放以来的新闻立法历经30多年至今未果,无论法治社会的内在要求还是传媒领域的现实发展,都表明了迫切的新闻立法诉求。在“新闻法”尚不能出台的众多复杂原因中,学术研究的偏颇却总是被忽略,研究方法的迷失带来学理探讨的浅尝辄止,宏观研究的乏善可陈,以及学科之间的壁垒隔膜。其背后透露出不容回避的学术勇气的不足和技术细节研究的缺乏。基于新闻传播法学理论建设的推进和现实新闻传播立法的需求,应首先在思想和理论上明确：新闻自由是谁的自由,谁可以办报,如何协调采访报道和国家公权力的关系等问题,同时必须关注新闻传播立法技术的研究,如舆论监督的规范体系,为新闻来源保密的规则归属等细节问题。
