Research investigating women’s risk assessments for intimate partner violence (IPV) shows that women can predict future violence
with relative accuracy. Limited research has investigated factors that are associated with perceived risk and the potential
behavioral consequences of victim risk perception. Results from a survey of women in a domestic violence shelter (N = 56) indicated that women perceive lower risk of future violence if the abusive relationship were to end and higher risk
of violence if it were to continue. Certain abuse experiences were related to elevated perceptions of personal risk for future
violence. Further, perceived personal risk predicted the women’s intention to terminate their relationship upon leaving shelter.
Results are discussed as they may inform interventions preventing IPV.

Regional conflicts are becoming increasingly complex due to the involvement of an ever more numerous and interconnected set of actors. Previous research has focused on regional conflict systems and has generated theoretical approaches such as the regional security complex paradigm. However, when complex, multifaceted, seemingly contradictory webs of relationships are spun in a region, new tools are needed to analyze and evaluate them. Drawing on previous regional conflict models, we propose a negotiation-oriented framework of regional conflict analysis that explores the type and intensity of relationships between state and nonstate actors in a conflict system. We offer a seven-step scale of relationships (ranging from ally to active armed opponent) that represents a novel contribution to the methodological efforts to analyze relationships in conflict systems. This framework brings to light the relational imbalance of the MENA region and has the potential to contextualize for negotiators and mediators the complex system of conflicts within, and possibly outside, the region.

Developmental Changes in Adolescents’ Perceptions of Relationships with Their Parents

This 4-wave longitudinal study examines developmental changes in adolescents’ perceptions of parent–adolescent relationships
by assessing parental support, conflict with parents, and parental power. A total of 951 early adolescents (50.4% boys) and
390 middle adolescents (43.3% boys) participated. Univariate and multivariate growth curve analyses showed that support declined
from early to middle adolescence for boys and girls and increased from middle to late adolescence for girls, while stabilizing
for boys. Conflict was found to temporarily increase during middle adolescence. Parental power (relative power and dominance
of parents) decreased from early to late adolescence. Results indicated that: (1) parent–adolescent relationships become more
egalitarian during adolescence, (2) parents perceived by adolescents as powerful are viewed as supportive, especially in early
adolescence, and (3) perceived conflict with parents is related to but not an impetus for changes in parent–adolescent relationships
towards more equality.

A daily diary method was used to examine the daily dynamics of adolescent conflict and perceived relationship satisfaction
with mothers, fathers, and best friends among a sample of 72 Dutch adolescents (M = 15.59 years). Multilevel analyses revealed that perceived relationship satisfaction with mothers, fathers, and best friends
was lower on days on which conflict occurred with mothers, fathers, and best friends than on days on which no conflict occurred.
More specifically, perceived relationship satisfaction was highest in a particular relationship on days when no conflict occurred,
second highest on days on which constructive conflict occurred, and lowest on days on which unconstructive conflict occurred.
Whereas in adolescents’ relationships with their parents, conflict and perceived relationship satisfaction were not found
to be related to each other one day later, conflict with their best friends—and especially unconstructive conflict—was found
to be related to higher perceived relationship satisfaction one day later.

Pubertal Timing and Depressive Symptoms in Early Adolescents: The Roles of Romantic Competence and Romantic Experiences
In spite of the large literature supporting the link between early pubertal timing and depression in adolescent girls, there
are some exceptions. This suggests that there may be factors that interact with pubertal timing, increasing risk for depression
in some girls, but not others. This study examined two such factors, romantic competence and romantic experiences, and their
role in the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between pubertal timing and depressive symptoms among 83 early adolescent
females (89% Caucasian). For on-time maturing girls (but not for early- or late-), lower levels of competence were associated
with higher levels of depressive symptoms concurrently, but not longitudinally. In addition, for on-time maturing girls, more
romantic experiences were associated with higher levels of depressive symptoms both concurrently and longitudinally. The discussion
focused on the need for greater conceptual and empirical clarity regarding the pubertal timing-depression association and
its potential moderators.

Distinctiveness of Adolescent and Emerging Adult Romantic Relationship Features in Predicting Externalizing Behavior Problems

Romantic relationship involvement has repeatedly been associated with the incidence of externalizing behavior problems, but
little is known about the nature and developmental significance of this relation. The current study extends previous research
by investigating whether and through what processes romantic relationships distinctively predict externalizing behavior problems
during adolescence compared to emerging adulthood. Data came from the Minnesota Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children.
As predicted, higher levels of romantic relationship security at 16 years were associated with lower levels of externalizing
behavior problems during both adolescence and emerging adulthood, but this inverse relation was stronger for emerging adults
than for adolescents. This relation was not attributable either to earlier quality of family and peer relationships or emerging
adulthood competence. Thus, security of romantic relationships may become increasingly predictive of individual differences
in externalizing behavior problems as individuals move from adolescence to emerging adulthood.

Organizational justice has been shown to be an important predictor of criminal justice employees’ work-related perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors. In this study, we take stock of the organizational justice effect on criminal justice employees’ work outcomes by subjecting the literature to a meta-analysis. Multilevel modeling based on 1,924 effect size estimates drawn from 143 studies (95 independent data sets) was used to establish the empirical status of the organizational justice effect. The results indicate a sizeable relationship between organizational justice and justice system employee work outcomes (Mz = .256, CI = [.230, .283]). The findings also demonstrate that the organizational justice effect size varies slightly across several methodological variations. Specifically, the organizational justice effect size is larger when the concept is measured with scales that contain survey items tapping into all four dimensions of justice. Also, we found that outcome type, presence of confounding mechanisms, research design, and sample characteristics moderate the justice effect. We conclude that organizational justice theory is a useful framework for developing a more theoretically informed understanding of justice system employees’ work outcomes. We discuss the theoretical implications of the meta-analytic findings and avenues for future research based on the results.

By differentiating between five specific forms of cybervictimization (denigration, betrayal, social exclusion, cyberstalking, happy slapping), the present study examined the multifaceted structure of cybervictimization and specific relationships o these five forms of cybervictimization with students’ self-esteem and social relationships. Moreover, mediating effects of self-esteem were explored. Factor analyses supported the five-factor structure. Self-esteem and social relationships were negatively related to almost all five forms of cybervictimization. However, hierarchical regression analysis showed that only student–student relationships were negatively predictive of social exclusion, while only teacher–student relationships were negatively predictive of denigration, betrayal, and cyberstalking. Further, self-esteem appeared to be a negative predictor and mediator of denigration and social exclusion. Girls experienced more betrayal than boys. Older students reported lower social exclusion but more cyberstalking than younger students.
