Bite marks: physical properties of ring adhesion to skin-phase 1

Abstract: Unsupported excised skin may shrink by as much as 50% or more. In 1981, a method was developed for ring adhesion to skin with the goal of minimizing tissue distortion upon excision. Five modified versions of the technique bearing the author’s name followed (Dorion types I, II, III, IV, and V). The scientific literature reveals little supporting empirical evidence for the preferential use of one adhesive/suturing technique over another. This study compares the use of various bonding materials (Loctite Super Glue gel^®, Dermabond?, Vetbond?), cleaning agents (ethanol, dishwashing liquid, and shaving cream), and depilatory (Veet^®) on the effects of ring adhesion to skin. The conclusions indicate that surface wetness is the most influential factor affecting ring adhesion to skin, followed by the type of bonding material, its “freshness,” and by the cleaning agent used to prepare the skin. The use of a depilatory or shaving cream is to be avoided.     

Correlation between saw blade width and kerf width

Most studies of saw marks have focused on morphological characteristics and their utility in identifying saws suspected to have been utilized in cases of criminal dismemberment. The present study examined the extent to which metric analysis may be used to correlate saw blade measurements with minimum kerf widths (MKWs). A sample of 56 partially defleshed white‐tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) long bones was utilized as proxy for human remains. The long bones were cut using a variety of commercially available saws, including 11 manual‐powered and 5 mechanical‐powered saws. A total of 496 false start kerfs (FSKs) were created. Two experiments were performed, with the first test examining the MKWs of FSKs produced on specimens that were restrained using a bench vise, while the second test analyzed the MKWs of FSKs produced on minimally restrained specimens. Statistical analysis using Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) indicated a positive relationship between saw blade width (mm) and MKW, with blade width (p < 0.001) and the overall difference between the mechanical‐ and manual‐powered saws (p = 0.029) tested, reaching statistical significance. A comparison of MKWs produced using manual‐powered saws on restrained and minimally restrained bones suggests that restraint condition (p = 0.009) has a statistically significant effect. In comparisons of MKWs to blade widths, the average ratio for mechanical‐powered saws is 18.7% greater than the average ratio for manual‐powered saws. While the mode of the ratios was 1.42, thus supporting the general rule that MKW does not exceed 1.5 times blade width, multiple individual ratios did surpass 1.5.     

驰名商标司法认定的主体资格亟待完善

目前,我国驰名商标的认定实行行政认定与司法认定并行的双轨制。由于驰名商标司法认定制度才初步建立,在司法实践中存在不少问题。这些问题的存在导致很多企业对通过司法程序认定驰名商标趋之若鹜,并产生不良的社会效应。要解决这一问题,最主要的办法是完善驰名商标司法认定的主体资格。具体措施包括取消基层法院认定驰名商标的资格,实行驰名商标司法认定异地管辖制度,实行驰名商标司法认定“核准”制度。     

健卫－8小口径运动步枪弹痕研究

健卫— 8小口径运动步枪属于小口径标准步枪 ,其枪弹为步枪长弹 ,在现场上时有出现。通过实验表明 ,该种步枪可致弹壳遗留较为清晰的痕迹主要有击针痕、拉壳钩痕、抛壳挺痕、弹底窝痕和枪机下表面痕 ,这些痕迹出现率也相对较高 ,为侦察检验鉴定提供了依据。     

被复制钥匙痕迹的研究

目的　找出一字型和十字型齿状钥匙被复制后形成的痕迹特征 ,为检案提供参考。方法　取 1 32把一字型齿状钥匙和 4 4把十字型齿状钥匙进行复制并经OLYMPUS连续变倍立体显微镜观察。结果　被复制钥匙的侧面 ,匙槽沟 ,牙花顶部曲面或钥匙凹窝面上均有明显的痕迹。结论　根据被复制钥匙痕迹特征 ,能为检验认定提供主要依据     

基于笔痕特征研判圆珠笔品牌的实验研究

利用配备PIA-6软件的Docubox Digital文检仪对不同品牌不同型号的圆珠笔书写的字迹笔痕特征进行观察分析,从点痕、线痕及划痕等实验现象探求不同品牌的圆珠笔书写字迹的笔痕特征,并建立根据笔痕特征研判圆珠笔品牌的检验方法,为案件鉴定提供科学依据。     

Biting Through an Arteriovenous Hemodialysis Graft: An Unusual Method of Suicide

Abstract:  Patients on long-term hemodialysis often have multiple medical and social problems with associated psychological stress and depression. The suicide rate in this population is higher than the general population, and suicides have been reported following severing or disconnection of hemodialysis vascular access sites. We report a patient on chronic hemodialysis with a history of depression and suicidal ideation who bit into his forearm arteriovenous graft and exsanguinated.

Abstract: Bite Marks: This study demonstrated that surface wetness was the most influential factor affecting ring adhesion to skin. Also, chemical depilatories and shaving creams were to be avoided when cleaning the skin. The second phase of this research examines the tensile stress needed to rupture the bond between TAK^® hydroplastic, three new cyanoacrylates, and pigskin with particular consideration for temperature variations. This study also considers solubility issues of different cyanoacrylates in 10% formalin. Finally, the Dorion Type V bitemark excision technique could significantly reduce the risks of tissue distortion when used in conjunction with the following methods and materials. The skin should be devoid of moisture, razor shaved, and cleaned with dishwashing detergent and 98.9% ethanol while avoiding the use of shaving creams and/or chemical depilatories where ring placement is anticipated. The use of unopened cyanoacrylate is encouraged with Permabond^® as the cyanoacrylate of choice.     

The experimental and case study of needle marks on the speedometer as the physical evidence for the collision speed analysis

The collision speed is important in accident analysis, and needle marks can be helpful as the physical evidence. The deceleration impact system has been built to analyze the mechanics of the needle and the gauge plate. Two isolated groups were designed to record the speed values under the same sample labels from real crashes. The visualization platform was built for the first group to collect needle marks. The second group recorded the speed values by other methods. The collision deceleration, the gauge plate materials, and the collision directions determine the forming of the needle marks. There were eight positive results from the 23 effective samples (12 frontal, four side, and seven rear), with discernible tip and/or middle marks on gauge plates. Multiple marks have been distinguished effectively. The low- and high-speed impacts have no obvious differences for real needle marks. It is more accurate for frontal impacts.
