Rein Taagepera: The vanguard of the Baltic thinking class

This article constructs a picture of change and stasis in cultures of gender in Latvia and theorizes the effect of these gender cultures on practices of family formation in the early post-communist period. Drawing in particular on women's perspectives, it offers an analysis grounded in gender and culture of the decline of marriage and the rise of non-marital births. The work argues that a narrative of male ‘marriageability’ has evolved as a component of feminine gender culture and offers one possible lens for analyzing post-communist demographic changes. While this research focuses on Latvia, the demographic trends noted have also characterized neighboring states.     

The influence of party leaders on women's representation in parliament, 1935–1975: the case of New Zealand

New Zealand women gained the vote in 1893, the first women in the world to do so. But they could not stand as candidates for Parliament. Early twentieth-century party leaders were reluctant to allow women full suffrage. This article examines the attitudes and influence of New Zealand party leaders from 1935 to 1975 in helping or hindering women gain representation in Parliament. It concludes that during those 40 years the most influential gatekeepers were the party leaders. By 1972, however, the Second Wave of Feminism and the changing attitudes of some party leaders resulted in women gaining more opportunities to become MPs and by 2001 an unprecedented number of women held leadership positions in the New Zealand Parliament.     

身体与空间：汉魏六朝时期上巳节中的女性与女性活动

上巳节是先秦现实社会生活场景在汉代的仪式化。汉代主流文化中的学者通过一系列的理论阐释和文化建构，使春季户外活动成为以女性民俗为中心的上巳节庆。在汉至六朝时期，上巳节的仪式内容经历了水滨祓禊、洛水之游和园池之宴的转变，作为以女性为主体或言女性广泛参与的节庆活动，在其变迁过程中，女性的活动空间也经历了一个由广阔到狭窄的演变过程；而她们自己，也由身体在自然空间的自由舒展，过渡成为在亭台楼阁等人工空间被男性所观赏的对象。女性身体的被束缚和活动空间的被限定，是父权制社会发展的自然结果。     

Men in Skirts

There are signs that the wearing of skirts by men appears to be on the increase in the West. Connor's essay provides a series of historical reflections on the signification and cultural phenomenology of male and female apparel. The first appearance of bifurcated dress in the late mediaeval period is considered, along with the struggle between men and women for command of lateral space during the seventeenth century in Europe, as attested to by commentators like John Bulwer and John Evelyn. Explications are offered of the thematics of the fringe and the pocket, as they are dramatized in trousers and skirts, as well as of the logic of lightness and of the pendant. Trousers, Connors concludes, have never lost their fanciful associations with utility, practicality and rationality; they are the signs of occupation, of being taken up in what you do, rather than consumed in what you are. The political victory of the trousered over the untrousered races (Romans, Scots, Indians etc.) is confirmed by its inversion in male masochist fantasies of 'petticoat government', from the late nineteenth century onwards.     

On the Progress of Women/Gender Studies in China from the Collection of Women＇s Studies ——Analysis of the Changes in the Columns, Themes and Contents ill the Past 20 Years

本文对《妇女研究论丛》创刊20年来的栏目变化、刊文情况以及主题与内容进行分析,探讨中国妇女/性别研究进展。结论认为,中国妇女/性别研究经历了由浅入深、不断走向成熟的过程,学术性和实践价值都在不断增强。但仍需进一步加强妇女/性别研究的理论创新,加强有关妇女发展和性别平等的重大现实问题研究,加强妇女发展与性别平等法律与政策研究,促进中国妇女/性别学科建设。

社会性别平等不仅仅是单纯的妇女的事情及其妇女组织的事情,或某一部分人、某一个具体领域的事情,需要全社会的关注和行动,没有男性的改变和参与,不可能从根本上解决社会性别平等问题。在项目实践中如何调动男性参与的积极性、发挥男性的作用,从而推动农村社会性别发展项目的顺利开展,促进社会性别平等的实现是一个值得深入探讨的课题。

2011年6月,日本政府发表了《男女共同参与白皮书》,力求对日本男女共同参与社会的现状以及相关政策做一个全面的总结。本文通过对白皮书的解读,分析了白皮书的基本内容和特点;其中特别关注了白皮书的结构以及政府对男女参与政治领域和科技领域的现状总结和政策目标。
