What does recovery mean to a forensic mental health patient? A systematic review and narrative synthesis of the qualitative literature

This is a systematic review and narrative synthesis of qualitative literature for forensic mental health patients’ perceptions of recovery. Relevant databases were searched and a total of 11 studies that fit the inclusion criteria were identified. Thematic Synthesis was applied to synthesise the collated themes into six superordinate themes: connectedness, sense of self, coming to terms with the past, freedom, hope and health and intervention. Two superordinate themes were particularly prevalent: connectedness and a sense of self. It is argued that a focus on increasing opportunities for forensic mental health patients to develop a sense of self and connectedness could help improve recovery. Future recommendations to expand on these findings include using grounded theory methods to develop theoretical understanding of the data.

以中华传统文化为视野的高校教学管理本土化研究——以福建为例

本土化是对教学管理理论及实践诉求的回应,包含引入、结合与创新三个层次,"引用"是前提,"结合"是关键,"创新"是根本。提升高校教学管理本土化的认识是我国高等教育加快实现现代化、国际化的需要。教学管理是高校教学工作的重要组成部分,在本土化发展方面我国高校教学管理具有引用、借鉴、结合并尚未形成理论与实践体系等特征。因此,从中华传统文化的视角研究教学管理本土化问题,对于深化高校教育教学改革,推进高等教育现代化发展,具有积极的意义。     

美国证券市场高频交易的最新法律监管动向——兼论“光大8·16事件”的防范

"光大8·16事件"是我国证券市场首例与高频交易有关的典型乌龙案例,其产生原因及严重后果引人深思。乌龙并不可怕,但一旦与高频交易相结合,其破坏力往往超乎想象。高频交易错误在计算机技术发达的美国早已不是什么新闻,特别是随着高频交易在美国的盛行,类似错误近期频发。为此,美国推出了综合审计追踪、市场数据信息分析系统、涨跌停板机制、全市场熔断机制等新举措,并酝酿推出全新的断路开关机制,以加强对证券市场高频交易的法律监管。这些最新动向中有不少值得我们借鉴,我们也应尽快明确对高频交易的监管,加快定义制定和数据收集工作,并适时推出监管"组合拳"。     

Characteristics of female patients admitted to an adolescent secure forensic psychiatric hospital

Bluebird House is the only mixed gender NHS secure forensic psychiatric hospital for adolescents in the South of England. It has admitted more than 30 female patients since the service opened in 2008. The admission criteria are that patients must be detained under the Mental Health Act and present evidence of being a risk of harm to others. This article describes the clinical characteristics of 30 consecutive female patients admitted to a highly specialised adolescent forensic inpatient service. Key results include a very high rate of incidents of risk behaviours exhibited by female patients within the unit but good clinical outcomes. The majority of patients had severe symptoms of mental disorder, especially emotional instability, self-harm behaviours and aggressive behaviours. Few had diagnoses of mental illness. Assessment findings from the Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory and the Structured Assessment of Violence Risk are discussed, as are parallel with studies from other female secure services.     

A survey of the provision of family therapy in medium secure units in Wales and England

A cross-sectional survey design was utilised to capture a snapshot of the provision of family therapy in medium secure units (MSUs) across Wales and England during 2013. Semi-structured interviews were administered via telephone interview with 39 MSUs. Information pertaining to the main research question was also gathered from a further 10 via email follow-up. Over a third of responding MSUs in Wales and England were offering family therapy, with team members being appropriately qualified and receiving regular supervision. Systemic psychotherapy was the most prevalent approach to working with families and it is suggested here that systemic psychotherapy fits well with the complexity and uniqueness of working with families in secure contexts.     

Effect of Substrate Interferences from High‐Density Polyethylene on Association of Simulated Ignitable Liquid Residues with the Corresponding Liquid

The effect of substrate interferences from high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) on the ability to associate an ignitable liquid residue with the corresponding liquid standard, using statistical procedures, is demonstrated. Gasoline, kerosene, and lighter fluid, at three different evaporation levels, were spiked onto HDPE and subsequently burned to generate simulated ignitable liquid residues (ILRs). Samples were extracted using a passive headspace procedure and analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The total ion chromatograms were subjected to data pretreatment procedures prior to principal components analysis and Pearson product moment correlation. Using the combination of these statistical procedures, simulated ILRs were successfully associated with the corresponding liquid type, despite the presence of compounds inherent to the HDPE substrate, as well as those resulting from pyrolysis of the substrate.     

Integrating risk,the Good Lives Model and recovery for mentally disordered sexual offenders

Abstract

Personality disordered and mentally disordered sexual offenders (MDSOs) with complex diagnoses such as schizophrenia, developmental disorders and mood disorders face challenges of restoring their mental health, living more safely with personality- and offence-related risks, while addressing concerns about their capacity to reintegrate into society; this has been termed “secure recovery”. This paper reviews the literature on recovery, demonstrating its commonality with the Good Lives Model (GLM) as applied to MDSOs' offending treatment. GLM appears to provide a better fit with the recovery needs of MDSOs than the Risk–Need–Responsivity model because it emphasises approach goals, enhanced responsivity and skills acquisition. Recovery needs to integrate coping with mental disorders with risk management and a healthy, future lifestyle. Both secure recovery and GLM support the need for client–clinician collaboration, promoting self-determination and a shared narrative about coping with enduring risk and the hope of sustained well-being.

Adging Up” to “Beef on Sight

Abstract

This qualitative study examined perceptions of the causes and nature of conflicts and violence among African-American girls in an urban high school. In-depth, iterative interviewing was used to explore the perceptions of these girls, male students, teachers, and other school personnel. Ethnographic observation was also used. Conflicts and violence among girls were produced by an insult or accusation made by one girl against another which by group norms required a commensurately aggressive response. Peers actively pressured girls to fight and those that did not were scapegoated by others. However, a mediation service was used by girls to end conflicts successfully.
