系统功能语言学强调语篇分析的实用性，其框架可用以分析各类英文语篇。以系统功能语言学中的经验功能理论为依据，分析警务英语语料中的样本语篇可以看出，警务英语的经验功能具有及物性，系统严谨客观、指向目标明确、实体属性清晰规范等特征。     

工人群体的媒介形象与话语表达——基于《人民日报》和《华西都市报》工人报道的内容分析

工人阶级是当前中国最大的社会群体,改革开放以来中国工人对社会、经济建设作出了巨大的贡献,但学界一直缺乏对媒介工人报道进行系统的研究.工人议题新闻报道的变迁可以为宏观社会研究或社会变迁研究提供一个微观的语言学视角,中共中央机关报《人民日报》和建国后中国第一份市场化报纸《华西都市报》改革开放以来关于工人的报道,报道量偏小,与工人群体现状有很大差距,工人议题报道在新闻源、工人媒介形象、工人媒介话语上表达具有固定的框架和模式,工人议题报道新闻源主要来自官方,工人议题报道中工人群体的话语表达比较缺乏且多正面,虽然各时期工人报道重点与工人群体状况变迁基本吻合,但是工人媒介形象和话语表达的固定框架影响工人舆情渠遘的畅通和媒介接近权.

'Brazil Needs to Change': Change as Iteration and the Iteration of Change in Brazil's 2002 Presidential Election1

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's triumph in Brazil's 2002 presidential election was construed in terms of a promise of radical change against the holders of the status quo . This article argues that in fact a more subtle political game was a stake in the election, a contest over the meaning and limits of change itself. The article examines how the various players – Lula da Silva, outgoing president Fernando Henrique Cardoso and the PSDB's presidential candidate José Serra – invoked and iterated a discourse of change to define and redefine the political dividing lines that marked out the electoral dispute and attempted to set or fix the distinctions between their political positions.

本文以西方主流NGO话语在本土的传播为路径,通过研究民间妇女组织的相关文献资料,归纳分析民间妇女组织领导者和参与者对自己组织的思考和社会角色定位,即他们的自我认同.分析认为,民间妇女组织自我认同在最近几年发生转变,即从关注妇女事业的民间妇女组织向关注公民社会发展的妇女NGO转变,这一转变与西方主流NGO话语在本土的系统传播密切相关.     

多模态话语分析理论的课堂教学研究

随着经济全球化、信息技术化、交际多模态化的转变,越来越多的中国大学英语教师认识到多模态的重要性,并将多模态教学方式应用于教学中。大学英语课堂不再局限于单一模态的语言教学,而是应用多种模态,包括音频、视频、PPT、互联网、模拟实验室等,给予学生多样化的课堂学习氛围,很大程度上激发了学生的学习兴趣。文章探讨多模态话语分析理论在课堂教学中的应用情况。     

Peddling a semiotics of fear: a critical examination of scare tactics and commercial strategies in public health promotion

In this study, we critically examine the ways in which a nationwide health promotion campaign – the 2013 Diabetes UK/Tesco diabetes campaign, the largest of its kind in the UK – seeks to raise the general public's awareness of Type 2 diabetes. We subject a series of six campaign images (including their layout and accompanying text) to a multimodal discourse analysis, identifying the presence of a range of fear-inducing, stigmatising and commercial strategies, through which the campaign emphasises the dangers of diabetes and advocates personal responsibility for assessing both individual and others' risk of the disease. Specifically, we describe, in multi-semiotic detail, three discursive techniques deployed in the campaign to achieve these ends: (1) the depiction of grief and amplification of diabetes-related danger, (2) the promotion of diabetes risk and localisation of individuals' responsibility for their health and (3) the commercial branding and framing of the Diabetes UK/Tesco partnership – including the promotion of goods and services – as a means of diabetes prevention and management. Our findings raise concerns about the moral legitimacy of using fear-inducing and commercial strategies in order to (effectively) raise public awareness of and responses to Type 2 diabetes, strategies which do little to address the environmental factors which are associated with increasing rates of the disease.     

Searchable talk: the linguistic functions of hashtags

An important dimension of social media discourse is its searchability. A key semiotic resource supporting this function is the hashtag, a form of social tagging that allows microbloggers to embed metadata in social media posts. While popularly thought of as topic-markers, hashtags are able to construe a range of complex meanings in social media texts. This paper uses the concept of linguistic metafunctions, to explore how hashtags enact three simultaneous communicative functions: marking experiential topics, enacting interpersonal relationships, and organizing text. Corpus-based discourse analysis of linguistic patterns in a 100 million word Twitter corpus is used to investigate these functions and how they relate to the notion of social search.     

Discourse of decency: white nationalists,white antiracists,and the criminality of color

Contemporary research on white racial attitudes on race and crime reflect a grouping of opinions on a traditional liberal-conservative scale. These two groupings reflect what sociologists and political scientists call ‘issue constraint’ or a ‘clustering’ of ideas into a specific ideological worldview. Many now argue this gulf is growing; a white ‘culture war’ that many interpret as evidence of the increasing fracturing and political bifurcation of white racial identities over ‘hot button’ topics like race and crime. While a substantial literature on race and crime finds white racial attitudes to vary by educational level and political orientation, we know less about shared understandings of crime and race in relation to the processes of white racial identity formation. Rather than view attitudinal statements on race and crime as accurate reflections of essential different and static white racial political positions or ideological orientations, additional scholarship can examine discourse on crime and race as constitutive of the white identities that wield them. Drawing from an ethnographic study with conservative white nationalists and liberal white antiracists, this paper addresses the following question: what is the relationship between discourse on crime and race and the ongoing process of white racial identity formation?
