Vitality and age of conjunctival petechiae: The expression of P-selectin

Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) results in displaying multiple ruptures of capillaries and venules define conjunctival petechiae as a rhexis haemorrhage. In order to distinguish between petechiae which have arisen before death as opposed to post-mortem artefacts and the establishment of the age of the vessel's damage, we carried out an investigation on a collection of samples from medico-legal cases (positive petechiae: n = 65; post-mortem artefacts: n = 12; control: n = 19) to establish whether the expression of the endothelial adhesion molecule P-selectin as demonstrated by immunohistochemical methods is influenced by trauma before death and possibly by time. Except for cases with massive congestion in those cases where the victim had survived for around minutes, CLSM examination revealed a strong endothelial reaction at the site where the vessel had ruptured. It was impossible to detect a strong P-selectin expression signal in both those vessels which had not suffered any mechanical insult and those which had experienced post-mortem rupture. Therefore, the elevated expression of P-selectin can be used as a criterion to distinguish between those lesions which have occurred in life and those which are post-mortem artefacts.

Discrimination of falls and blows in blunt head trauma: systematic study of the hat brim line rule in relation to skull fractures

In the discrimination of falls from blows in blunt head trauma, the hat brim line rule is one of the most often used criteria. The present study assesses the validity of the hat brim line rule for skull fractures and looks at other possible criteria. All autopsy cases were retrospectively analyzed on a 5-year period. Cases selected consisted of downstairs falls (n = 13), falls from one's own height (n = 23), and homicidal blows (n = 44). Results show that fractures above the hat brim line are more in favor of blows, while fractures in the hat brim line zone are more difficult to distinguish. The majority of fractures were located on the left side for homicidal blows and on the right side for falls. A higher average number of lacerations was revealed for homicidal blows. In conclusion, this study establishes three criteria in favor of blows: (i) localization of a wound above the hat brim line; (ii) left side lateralization; and (iii) a high number of lacerations.

城市房屋拆迁一直是社会关注的焦点。在我国城市房屋拆迁制度的探讨中,更多关注拆迁过程中的土地征收和征用、补偿安置、被拆迁人合法权益的维护、公共利益的界定等内容,而对拆迁过程中政府的行为讨论较少。事实上,我国目前的城市房屋拆迁工作,政府扮演着非常重要的角色。城市房屋拆迁中的政府行为,包括行政行为和行政相关行为,存在诸多问题,需要在法律层面认真研究并加以完善。     

应用人体躯干段多参数推断成人身高

目的推动人体身高推断的再研究和人体躯干段体表解剖标志间距推断身高的创新应用。方法建立人体躯干段体表解剖标志间距参数采集规范,采集933例长三角地区成年人群数据,应用多元线性回归方法进行统计分析,建立推断身高的回归方程。结果建立了以性别(x_1)、颈臀线(x_2)、胸耻线(x_3)、肩髂间距(x_4)、肩宽(x_5)5个变量与身高(y)的多元线性回归方程y=105.406+5.414 x_1+0.436 x_2+0.286 x_3+0.225 x_4+0.193 x_5。结论该方法适合法医快速、简便且较准确地推断身高。     

A Preliminary Study on Sources of Banding Artifacts for the Identification of Monochromatic Laser Printers,

The analysis of questioned documents printed with monochromatic toner has been a great challenge to document examiners. Banding artifacts, which are often perceived in the outputs of laser printers, could be a solution to the identification of printers. In this study, sources other than the gear transmission errors were discovered for some primary banding frequency components. By detecting the angular velocity variation of photosensitive drums and other rotating parts of the tested printers and comparing them with the banding signals extracted from the printouts, the authors located the sources of banding frequency components. It was shown that the sources of some primary and persistent banding signals, which were previously unknown, were traced to the periodic velocity variations of the motors or the timing belts. As inherent signatures, banding artifacts could be promising features for discriminating documents printed by individual laser printers.     

Testing a Novel 3D Printed Radiographic Imaging Device for Use in Forensic Odontology

There are specific challenges related to forensic dental radiology and difficulties in aligning X‐ray equipment to teeth of interest. Researchers used 3D printing to create a new device, the combined holding and aiming device (CHAD), to address the positioning limitations of current dental X‐ray devices. Participants (N = 24) used the CHAD, soft dental wax, and a modified external aiming device (MEAD) to determine device preference, radiographer's efficiency, and technique errors. Each participant exposed six X‐rays per device for a total of 432 X‐rays scored. A significant difference was found at the 0.05 level between the three devices (p = 0.0015), with the MEAD having the least amount of total errors and soft dental wax taking the least amount of time. Total errors were highest when participants used soft dental wax—both the MEAD and the CHAD performed best overall. Further research in forensic dental radiology and use of holding devices is needed.
