This study examined the mediating role of self-blaming attributions on peer victimization-maladjustment relations in middle
school and the moderating role of classroom ethnic diversity. Latino and African American 6th grade participants (N = 1105, 56% female) were recruited from middle schools in which they were either members of the numerical majority ethnic
group, the numerical minority, or one of several ethnic groups in ethnically diverse schools. Peer nomination data were gathered
in the Fall of 6th grade to determine which students had reputations as victims of harassment and self-report data on self-blame
for peer harassment and the adjustment outcomes of depressive symptoms and feelings of self-worth were gathered in the Spring
of 6th grade, approximately 6 months later. A mediational model in which self-blame partly explained the relation between
victimization and maladjustment was supported among students from the majority ethnic group in their classroom but not among
students from the minority group. The usefulness of including ethnic diversity as an important context variable in studies
of peer victimization during early adolescence was discussed.

This paper uses an ecological perspective to explore the risk factors associated with bullying behaviors among a representative
sample of adolescents aged 11–14
Data derived from the Health Behavior in School Children: WHO Cross-National Survey were used to model the relationship between bullying and media effects, peer and family support systems, self-efficacy, and
school environment. Overall, the results of this study suggest that bullying increases among children who watch television
frequently, lack teacher support, have themselves been bullied, attend schools with unfavorable environments, have emotional
support from their peers, and have teachers and parents who do not place high expectations on their school performance. In
addition, we found an inverse relationship between being Asian or African American, feeling left out of school activities
and bullying. Our results lend support to the contention that bullying arises out of deficits in social climate, but that
social support systems mediate bullying behavior irrespective of the student’s racial/ethnic characteristics, parental income
levels or media influences. Because the number of friends and the ability to talk to these friends increases the likelihood
of bullying, we suggest that bullying is not simply an individual response to a particular environment but is a peer-group
behavior. We conclude that limiting television viewing hours, improving student’s abilities to access family support systems
and improving school atmospheres are potentially useful interventions to limit bullying behavior.

Protective Effects of Parental Monitoring on Offending in Victimized Youth in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Empirical and conceptual literature in the United States and Western Europe provides robust evidence of victimization as a risk factor for juvenile offending and parental monitoring as a protective factor. The current study examines relationships among victimization, monitoring, and offending using a sample of youth from Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). Findings indicate monitoring has a protective effect, victimization increases risk, monitoring level moderates the effect of victimization on offending, and moderation effects vary by age and gender. Discussion of findings identifies implications for efforts in BiH to develop a comprehensive strategy for preventing and responding to juvenile offending. 相似文献

The finding that victims and offenders are often the same individuals has led to attempts at explaining the positive correlation between victimization and offending. Much of the evidence for the positive relationship between victimization and offending, however, is based on samples of adolescents and young adults, or on data with other limitations. In the present study, we use national data on self-reported victimization and offending to examine the victimization-offending relationship across the life span, from adolescent to middle-aged to elderly respondents. The results indicate that, with respect to the typical victimization measures included in the National Crime Victimization Survey and in many self-report surveys, the relationship between victimization and offending declines from adolescence and young adulthood to middle age and older ages. The results also vary by gender, with a positive relationship between victimization being present primarily or solely for males for some offenses. These results suggest that explanations of the victimization-offending relationship need to account for the changing nature of the relationship between victimization and offending across the life span and the different relationships between victimization and offending for females and males. 相似文献

“Always Use Protection”: Communication Boys Receive About Sex From Parents,Peers, and the Media 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Although parents are often thought to be the primary communicators of sexual information, studies have found that many adolescent
boys report receiving little or no parental communication about sex. Instead, boys report learning about sex mostly from their
peers and the media. However, little is known about the content of these communications, from any source. Using a sample of
286 male undergraduates, this study employed a mixed-method approach to examine the amount and content of sex-related communication
boys received from their parents, peers, and the media. Results indicated that adolescent boys report receiving less sexual
communication from their parents than from peers and the media. In terms of content, parental messages focused on abstinence
and contraception while peer and media messages were significantly more sex-positive. Analyses of ethnic group variation showed
that African American adolescents reported receiving the most parental communication and Asian American boys reported the
least, with further variability in the content of the messages. Findings also document considerable diversity of message content,
both within and across source, highlighting the utility of comparative and multi-method approaches.

ABSTRACTThis study used data from an in-person paper-and-pencil climate survey administered to students in a random sample of classes at a four-year southeastern university. Respondents (N = 248) left unsolicited qualitative comments on the survey (N = 540). Grounded theory was used to determine if themes existed among them. Questions on school safety, rape myths, and resource knowledge prompted the most unsolicited comments (n = 111). Comments centered on clarification or opinions. Given the survey was adapted from a prior climate survey, unsolicited comments highlight areas of clarification and improvement for future iterations of climate surveys. Implications for campus safety are discussed. 相似文献

ABSTRACTYouth with ADHD are more at-risk for peer victimization than their typically developing peers, and may not be benefiting from current interventions. Thus, we sought to examine risk (i.e., anxiety, depression, and forms of aggression) and protective (i.e., social skills and social acceptance) factors for peer victimization in this group. Participants were 123 young adolescents diagnosed with ADHD, who were attending grades six through eight. We found that relational aggression (i.e., excluding others from activities) and anxiety symptoms were among the strongest risk factors for victimization. Anxiety symptoms were associated with victimization over and above depressive symptoms. Social acceptance buffered risk conferred by the risk factors. Future work is needed to investigate the degree to which the relations among internalizing symptoms and victimization differ in youth with ADHD relative to typically developing youth, and assess causality of the relations. 相似文献

According to Agnew’s General Strain Theory, many individuals who experience strain are more likely to engage in crime or become delinquent. To date, past research has examined the relationship between victimization and fear of crime, as well as the corresponding relationship between fear of crime and self-protective behaviors. Yet, the mediating role fear of sexual assault may have in accounting for the association between prior sexual assault victimization and self-protective behaviors has not been evaluated. The current study addresses this gap in the literature using data collected from a random sample of college students from 12 universities in the United States. The results indicated that the relationship between prior sexual assault victimization and self-protective behavior is partially mediated by fear of sexual assault. The study concludes with a discussion of implications and limitations, as well as directions for future research. 相似文献

ABSTRACT The present study used a unique measure of self-perceived gender typicality to better examine the association of gender with cyber victimization and perpetration. Participants were 297 adolescent males and females recruited from independent schools in grade 8 (Mage = 13.8) and grade 10 (Mage = 15.8) who completed a self-report survey. Multiple regression analyses revealed that only for males, high other-gender typicality and low same-gender typicality were associated with high cyber victimization, but when same-gender typicality was high there was no association. Independent associations of same- and other-gender typicality with cyber perpetration were present only for males. Findings highlight that the importance of considering same- and other-gender typicality for adolescent boys’ engagement in cyberbullying. 相似文献

ABSTRACT We studied a representative sample of male and female inmates (N = 266) in two prisons (remand and sentenced) in Western Canada. Our research asks: what are the self-reported victimization histories of currently incarcerated men and women prior to first charge (i.e., before becoming known offenders) and during their life-course? As a second objective, we discuss how we sought to mobilize our findings to change relevant policy and police practice. We found that the overwhelming majority of our female participants had experienced violent, sexual, or property victimization throughout their life course; the majority had experienced victimization prior to first charge. Based on our findings, the local police service introduced victim services for the incarcerated population as well as made changes to their recruit training program to make new police officers aware of the victim–offender overlap and its effects. If replicated, the introduction of victim services for inmates in other jurisdictions and the education of police officers on the victim–offender overlap would emphasize the humanitarian recognition of supporting victims who need help, while also having a series of subsidiary benefits with respect to re-offending, resiliency, and police legitimacy. 相似文献
