This study uses longitudinal data on a sample of 10th graders to investigate the associations between self-esteem, family challenge, and 2 indicators of adolescent achievement: high school grades and extracurricular involvement. Research on self-esteem and on family challenge has linked both of these factors to achievement in adolescents, but studies have not simultaneously examined the effects of these factors on achievement. The present study finds that family challenge and self-esteem are correlated with one another, and examines the effects of each of these factors on achievement while controlling on the other factor. Controlling on self-esteem, family challenge was positively associated with grades in school, and was marginally associated with extracurricular participation. Controlling on family challenge, we did not find self-esteem to be predictive of grades or extracurricular involvement in longitudinal analyses, but we did find some evidence for a relationship in the opposite direction, with grades in 10th grade predicting self-esteem in 12th grade. Results also suggest differences in academic achievement and extracurricular participation by race/ethnicity. Implications of these findings for the role of family challenge and self-esteem in the positive development of adolescents are discussed. 相似文献

ABSTRACTModern Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have increasingly been used in education systems and for learning across the world over the last quarter of a century, and are frequently seen as being an important means of delivering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG4. However, rhetoric about their potential benefits has often led to uncritical adoption of inappropriate and costly technologies, that have not benefited the poorest and most marginalised. This contribution explores likely uses of such technologies in Commonwealth education systems in the future, and what needs to be done so that these do indeed benefit everyone, rather than just the privileged with access to the latest technologies. It begins with an overview of existing Commonwealth initiatives, and then explores how ICT use for learning throughout the life-cycle is likely to change over the next decade. The next section suggests how Commonwealth organisations can best support governments and citizens in ensuring equitable distribution of relevant learning opportunities and mitigating the negative aspects of technology use. In conclusion, it advocates for the need to focus especially on the poorest and most marginalised, and it highlights the challenges of a future in which machines and humans are ever more intertwined. 相似文献

The object of this essay is to explore the central role played by the ‘ethic of care’ in debates within and beyond feminist
legal theory. The author claims that the ethic of care has attracted feminist legal scholars in particular, as a means of
resolving the theoretical, political and strategic difficulties to which the perceived ‘crisis of subjectivity’ in feminist
theory has given rise. She argues that feminist legal scholars are peculiarly placed in relation to this crisis because of
their reliance on the social ‘woman’ whose interests are the predominant concern of feminist legal engagement. With the problematisation
of subjectivity, the object of feminist legal attention disappears and it is in attempts to deflect the negative political
consequences of this that the ethic of care has been invoked, the author argues, unsuccessfully. The essay concludes with
suggestions as to how the feminist project in law might proceed in the wake of the crisis of subjectivity and the failure
of the ethic of care to resolve it.

The paper analyses the reception of Christian Wolff in the work of the founders of scientific socialism. It is discussed how Marx, Engels and Lenin thought about a leading representative of German Enlightenment. The author argues that the classics of scientific socialism knew about Wolff in an off-handed and secondary way. As the case of Wolff shows their studies regarding philosophical, legal, sociological and economic theories and those who represented them were strongly influenced by thinking with the logic and in the categories of class antagonism and struggle. The aim of this paper is to analyze the factors that influence the length of time to promotion for male and female academics.
Promotion is defined as elevation to a professorship. We examine the role of academic profiles, which are based not only on
publications, but also include activities such as fund raising, consulting, teaching, and managerial appointments (dean of
a department for instance). The paper examines the factors that speed up or slow down the progress of an academic career for
males and females, respectively, to explore the “glass ceiling” effects. Survival and duration models are used to test whether
the gender differential persists after controlling for observed and unobserved heterogeneity. The originality of this paper
lies in the use of duration models to track sex differences in promotion criteria. It highlights that the different criteria
of promotion for male and female academics: women have to demonstrate higher involvement in different networks in order to
