Abstract This study examined conditions of safety and violence in South Florida elementary schools. Although conditions were generally considered safe in these schools, approximately one-half of the elementary school students in the study did express some concerns about their safety, especially in school bathrooms and the area outside of their school building. Students who do not have positive relationships with other students at school and do not feel safe in their community generally feel less safe at school. In addition, students who are experiencing academic difficulty in school and do not expect to attain an education beyond high school feel less safe at school. Abstract The study develops a school safety and student achievement model, incorporating the concepts of student background, school structure, school culture, school disorder, and student academic achievement, and fits it to 613 elementary schools in New York City, using Structural Equations Modeling technique. The model fits the data well based on both Chi-square test statistic and goodness of fit indexes. The model accounts for 71% of school variance in student achievement. The study confirms that student background is associated with student behavior and student learning. School disorder affects student achievement negatively directly and indirectly mediated by student attendance. The study suggests that policy initiative could be implemented to improve school climate, therefore reduce school disorder and improve student achievement. 相似文献

In the last twenty-five years negotiation has become widely recognized both as a topic of serious research and as an essential, frequently used set of skills. Organizations currently spend tens of billions of dollars annually on training, and mounting evidence suggests that training in interpersonal and problem-solving domains typically has a significantly positive effect. But little systematic research has been conducted concerning the actual effectiveness of negotiation training. This article reviews the available evidence regarding the effectiveness of negotiation training using four levels of outcome measurement. While far less prevalent than one would wish, existing evidence suggests that negotiation training can have positive effects. In this article, I review the specific effects of different teaching methods, and recommend additional research. 相似文献

Laws in the UK and the USA protect college students with disabilities from discrimination. The laws of both nations are complex and require institutions of higher education to accommodate qualified students. This article examines the requirements of both nations’ laws with respect to the kinds of inquiries that may be made of students with disabilities, how the institution must go about determining what accommodations are needed, whether the needed accommodations are reasonable and consistent with academic standards or requirements, and whether the institution is required to attempt to accommodate undisclosed disabilities. The article also discusses how the laws in each nation are enforced, addresses the remedies that are available to students in both nations, and focuses on the interpretation of these laws with respect to admission, academic accommodations, nonacademic accommodations (such as housing, student discipline, and co-curricular activities). It also discusses the institution's duty to students with psychiatric disorders who may engage in self-destructive behavior. 相似文献

中国学术建制化水平很低是不争的事实.当前中国学术界的诸多问题,如低水平重复、粗制滥造、泡沫学术、抄袭剽窃、学术评审深度腐败等都是这一事实的表现.学术建制化水平与学术人口之间有密切的关系.知识生产的稳定发展取决于学术建制化水平和学术人口之间的比率,在学术建制化水平很低的情况下,学术人口的膨胀只会带来负面效应,并将妨碍学术的建制化;反之,如果学术建制化水平很高,那么学术机制会自行调节学术人口,使之与学术发展规模和水平相适应.前者带来的是我们所称的"大众学术",而学术建制化水平与学术人口相当的时候则是"精英学术".大众学术形态所引致的学术高科层化、低建制化及其集体性与个体性、唯智主义与反智主义的矛盾,已经成了当代中国学术发展难以挣脱的"铁笼". 相似文献
