The role of individual differences in understanding and predicting workplace safety

While U.S. colleges and universities ponder their mission, vision, values, and virtues, researchers at a large, urban, Catholic, patron-identity university actively engaged in empirical assessments of “who we say we are.” In this themed issue, faculty, undergraduate, and graduate students are a research team engaged in quantitative and qualitative analysis of their school's mission identity and mission-driven activities. Results from several sets of studies around student perceptions and impact of mission are presented and discussed. School administrators and those interested in community engagement impacts on students may find these articles useful and informative.

Dr Ivy Williams: inside yet outside

ABSTRACT

Dr Ivy Williams was the first woman to be called to the Bar of England and Wales. Despite this, she never took up the practice of law and after this historic moment Dr Williams returned to her life as a legal academic. This article examines Dr Williams’ journey in legal life, aiming to uncover her motivations for becoming admitted and her subsequent turning away from life at the Bar. Prior to her admission, Dr Williams had suggested that women might practise as ‘outside lawyers’. With that in mind, this article will consider Dr Williams’ scholarship and her contribution to legal academia and seek to answer whether this path can be seen as an alternative legacy to the women in law.     

收容教育制度的法理分析

收容教育制度作为一种长期限制人身自由的行政强制措施,对打击卖淫嫖娼活动、维护社会治安秩序具有积极作用。但是,收容教育制度在权力实体设置运行及权力程序设置等方面存在诸多缺陷,影响了其合法性与合理性,应当对其重新进行合理设计。     

高校协同创新:惩防学术腐败新思维

近年来,高校学风建设已经成为社会关注的焦点问题,被曝光的学术腐败事件给国家科技创新体系带来了不良影响,"2011计划"的推动和实施,不仅能加强高校与科研机构、行业企业开展深度合作,促进资源共享,而且也为惩防学术腐败和科技体制改革的发展提供了新契机。以协同创新为切入口惩防学术腐败的对策主要有:完善评审和管理制度,授第三方审决权;籍助曝光威慑力,发挥媒体监督作用;注重协同创新实绩,淡化论文评审指标;建立健全监督审计制度,管好协同创新科研经费。通过营造积极向上、风清气正的教学科研环境,培育求真务实、自由严肃的学术氛围,才能真正有效遏制学术不端行为,全面提升高校自主创新能力和水平。     

Who Develops a University Invention? The Impact of Tacit Knowledge and Licensing Policies

In this paper, I propose a theoretical model to illustrate how the inventor know-how affects whether the inventor starts a firm to develop her idea or licenses an invention to an established firm for development. Inventor start-ups are characterized as development organizations that serve a temporary role in the invention–innovation process, developing an invention until they can sell the developed invention to an established firm that owns requisite complementary assets for commercialization. This model is then used to analyze the role and impact of a university technology transfer office (TTO) on this process to understand how TTO’s may both positively and negatively impact the transaction. The model posits a general theory of inventor–entrepreneur behavior in university and corporate research labs based on two factors: the importance of know-how and the distribution of inventors’ personal costs to transfer that know-how.

改革开放以来,公安学术期刊队伍不断发展壮大,对公安工作起着积极的指导和推动作用,促进了公安理论研究水平的不断提高。但是,公安学术期刊的大众化和实践性问题一直困扰着我们。要解决好这个问题,必须明确三点：1.公安学术期刊的界定;2.大众化是提高公安队伍理论水平的关键;3.实践性是新世纪公安工作对公安学术期刊的必然要求。
