Philosophy Wisdom of Loving Beauty——A case study from The Symposium by Plato

Philosophy means loving wisdom. However, the meaning of loving wisdom has many dimensions. Loving wisdom, starting from the ancient Greek, encountered a truth turn in its development but failed to solve the long-existing philosophical crisis in an effective way. With exploring the wisdom of loving beauty in The Symposium by Plato, this paper preliminarily interprets the connotation, practice modes and historical events of loving beauty. Meanwhile, malposition mode is proposed in this paper as a supplement element to the practical ladder mode to act as an effective way to solve the philosophical crisis and the wisdom of loving beauty is regarded as the possible direction of philosophical thinking and practice.     

The Beauty Premium: Physical Attractiveness and Gender in Dictator Games

Are beautiful people better negotiators? In this article, I present evidence from a simple bargaining game in which players listened to prerecorded speeches and viewed the pictures of other players. I found that physically attractive players received a greater share of the surplus when their partners could both listen to their speeches and view their pictures. This effect was strongest when the listening partner was female. These results suggest new directions for experimental and empirical research on the role of nonresumé characteristics on labor market outcomes, and also has implications for those practitioners involved in negotiations characterized by extreme power imbalances between the parties.

作为一门新兴的交叉学科,神经美学主要采用比较法、神经心理学方法及无损伤的脑成像技术来考察审美欣赏与艺术创造活动的神经机制。已有的神经美学研究大大促进了我们对于审美欣赏与艺术创造的神经基础的了解。未来的研究应该加强对舞蹈、雕刻和文学等艺术类别的研究,并对审美知觉、审美情绪及审美判断等主题进行更为深入细致的研究。同时,还应该加强与心理学、进化学、神经科学等邻近学科的联系,通过整合多学科的研究方法来促进神经美学的大力发展。神经美学是一门年轻的学科,在发展过程中也面临某些问题和挑战。例如研究的结果不一致、缺乏生态效度,研究方法上存在一定的缺陷等。     

Mayahood Through Beauty: Indian Beauty Pageants in Guatemala

The election of a Ra'bin Ajaw constitutes the climax of the National Folklore Festival ( Festival Folklórico Nacional ), which since 1969 has taken place in Cobán during the last week of July. All participants are Maya Indians and must wear the traditional folk costume of their native township. The intention of this and other Indian pageants has been to preserve and reinvigorate traditional forms of cultural expression. Different from Ladina beauty queens, Indian queens are elected not so much on the basis of their looks as on their aptitude for representing cultural 'authenticity'. However, as the notion of the authentic relates to how cultural identities are constructed in the present, the beauty pageant has increasingly been troubled by a tension between a traditional folklorist type of orientation and a more recent and politicised Mayanist one. Indeed, the Indian pageants, originally formed within a folklorist paradigm, have become important arenas for the communication of Maya consciousness and identity.
