Early Voting and Campaign News Coverage

The proportion of votes cast before election day has risen steadily over the last two decades. Previous research asked how early voting has impacted voter participation. In this article, we ask how early voting has affected the flow of information to voters through the mass media. By increasing the number of days voters are able to vote, are we also increasing the number of days that candidates and campaigns continuously disseminate campaign-related information to the news media? Is news coverage of campaigns quantitatively and qualitatively different when opportunities to vote early are available and utilized? Our expectation is that early voting significantly influences the volume and nature of campaign news coverage. We study the effects of early voting on campaign news coverage of gubernatorial and Senate races in 2006 and 2008. Our findings reveal that the volume and content of campaign news coverage is significantly influenced by early voting.

Caribbean Taliban: Cuban American Terrorism in the 1970s

ABSTRACT

Most scholars have not taken Cuban-American terrorism in the 1970s seriously, despite the unprecedented campaign of terror it unleashed. Borrowing a framework of self-identity usually applied to other terrorist groups and using case studies of the Cuban Nationalism Movement in New Jersey and of Alpha 66 in Florida, this article argues that Cuban-American political ideology was the key to its impact and its support from communities in Florida and New Jersey. Militant exiles saw themselves as betrayed by two enemy states, entitled to rule in their homeland, and imbued with a mission of civilizational renewal. In these ways, Cuban-American terrorists were similar to the Taliban in Afghanistan and their reign of terror in the 1970s should be appreciated as a major episode in the history of U.S. and global terrorism.     

中国国家荣誉制度立法的历史考察( 1881 -1949)

晚清政府在借鉴西方勋章制度的基础上,颁发了《奏定宝星章程》,开了近代中国国家荣誉立法之先河.其后的民国政府颁发了《勋章章程》、《颁给勋章条例》等系列规范,构建了以勋章制度为基本内核的国家荣誉制度.早期中共政权也制定了英模表彰等方面的条例和规范.中国近代以来诸如此类的国家荣誉立法例,为新中国的国家荣誉制度立法和建设提供了历史借鉴和启示.     

民初婚姻法律近代化的几个问题

上承晚清下启民国南京政府时期的民初法律近代化,是中国法律近代化道路上的一个关键时期。在“政体虽更,民彝无改,恪守礼法”的立法指导下,民初婚姻法律近代化颇具传统特色。学界对其评价褒贬不一,我们应对这一时期婚姻法律近代化的诸多问题给予重新审视。     

在化解社会矛盾中检察机关执法办案预警机制的建立

随着社会经济、文化的快速发展,社会利益格局大规模调整,大量的社会矛盾纠纷以法律诉求的形式涌入司法领域。因此,化解社会矛盾纠纷、促进社会和谐稳定成为当前检察机关工作服务大局的重要任务。文章以检察机关构建执法办案风险评估预警机制为主线,从办案风险评估入手,结合执法办案风险评估预警机制的中国特色,提出了构建该机制的具体模式、方法和措施。     

新中国成立初期贯彻《婚姻法》过程中妇女自杀或被杀的性别视角探析

1950年5月1日起施行的《中华人民共和国婚姻法》在婚姻自由和夫妻权利平等等方面赋予了女性法律主体地位，实行男女平等的基本原则，这是几千年来婚姻制度领域的根本性变革，这种根本性变革引起了源于父权制特权的乡村干部、婆婆、丈夫等的顽强抵抗，这些势力单独施虐或二者、三者合伙施虐都可能造成妇女自杀或被杀的惨剧。同时，性别又与阶级、民族、国家等因素密切关联，三者交织在一起，更加剧了妇女自杀或被杀问题的错综复杂性。     

明治时期日本女性杂志考略

女性杂志的诞生和发展,是日本社会近代化进程中的一个重要议题。明治时期是日本女性杂志的发端期,女性杂志在这一时期的日本女子教育中起着十分重要的作用;特别是在职业女性的养成方面,成为日本女性进入社会的主要途径。在这个意义上,关于明治时期女性杂志的考察,实际上也是近代日本女性生存状态的一种转型研究。     

日本学界关于清代中前期中日关系史的研究

近百年来,通过几代学人的努力,日本学界在清代中前期中日关系史领域的研究可以说取得了相当丰硕的成果。特别在外交史方向,以往学者虽在新史料发掘和编纂上成果颇多,但缺乏抽象性的理论概括。岩井茂树"沉默外交"理论的提出,是对该领域研究的一个重要贡献。概括而言,日本学者的研究继续沿袭了该国汉学的一贯传统,重视新史料的发掘和编纂,其中浦廉一、大庭脩等老一辈学者的贡献尤为卓著。而在研究方法上,以综合运用中国(尤其是清代满文档案)、日本、朝鲜及琉球各国史料,对具体史实进行考证为主。     

短暂的联合：越南民族主义力量联合战线研究

20世纪初，越南卷入了东南亚民族独立运动的浪潮。在各种政治势力中，平川派、高台教与和好教作为3股民族主义武装力量在反对法国殖民主义的斗争中扮演了重要角色。这3股势力产生于法国殖民统治时期，是民族矛盾日益尖锐的产物。历经反法斗争、武装割据的发展阶段，这3股势力走上了共同反对吴庭艳政权的道路，组建了民族主义力量联合战线。然而，这一战线仅仅存在了两个月就走向破裂和消亡，究其原因，是缘于3股势力在各自产生、发展过程中所形成的不同特点，也是法国与美国在越南实力消长的必然结果。
