Subterranean Sources of Juvenile Delinquency in China: Evidence from Birth Cohort Surveys

This article examines possible reasons for the dramatic rise in Chinese juvenile delinquency rates that have occurred since the start of economic reform. The article focuses on the degree to which relatively recent modifications in the ideology and practice of Chinese communism have engendered new social pressures and strains on young people. Delinquents’ social values are compared with those of non-delinquent youth, drawing heavily from data collected in a longitudinal birth cohort study. The dataset is assessed for evidence of subterranean values; i.e., subculture-based reflections of principles found within the dominant political culture; based on the theory that youthful deviance and delinquency in China are fueled primarily by the relatively rapid diffusion of often-contradictory market-based precepts. The lingering impact of Maoism is also assessed, particularly with regard to incongruous ideological influences on youth.

Leaps of Faith in the Obesity Debate: a Cautionary Note for Policy Note for Policy-makers

The obesity epidemic has become an issue of major public concern in recent years, with dire predictions of its impact on public health budgets and the long-term health of populations in the developed world. Governments are being urged to act to improve our eating habits and make us more active. Policy proposals range from education campaigns to banning junk food advertising to more extreme measures such as 'fat taxes'. Although the debate has included discussion of public policy solutions to the problem, there has been little input from public policy specialists. This article explores some of the leaps of faith that are currently being made in the obesity debate and suggests that policy-makers need to be cautious about how they respond to calls for action. It is suggested that public policy research may provide some useful frameworks for considering the nature of the problem and assessing possible solutions.

An Ethical Interpretation of Free Will and Game-Playing in Harold Pinter's The Lover

Harold Pinter's The Lover (1963) arouses reflections on the marital ethics. As the main plot of the play, the game-playing between Richard and Sarah in their house demonstrates literally the social and ethical transformation during 1960s—1970s. By using the artistic technique of role-switching, Pinter intends to decode the fact that Man is an existence of Sphinx factor, composing human and animal factors, which causes the extramarital love. During the erotic game, the couple is controlled by the animal factors, and their free will overcomes the moral obligation within the ethical conflicts. There is no doubt that the essence of game-playing is how to make the ethical choice. At the same time, the negative effects from the extramarital love is also emphasized.
