Opinion Formation in Social Media: The Influence of Online News Dissemination on Facebook Posts

ABSTRACT

This study aims to explore the influence of online news dissemination on public opinion in social media and examine what factors determine the influence. Online news stories (N=51) from 37 sources and Facebook posts (N=317) on the construction of Africa’s first modern international railway line, the Ethiopia-Djibouti railway line, were retrieved between June and November 2017 for the period April 11, 2012 to November 30, 2017. Comparative content analysis of online news and Facebook posts revealed that there was positive correlation between frame repetition by news media and prevalence of the frame in social media opinion. The results showed that there were statistically significant associations in the presence of positive as well as negative frame tones between news articles and Facebook posts. However, the relationship in the use of neutral frame tone between news and opinion was not significant. Regarding composition, short news stories exert more influence on social media opinion than longer news articles, as indicated by negative correlation between news article length and its influence on opinion. Overall, the results suggest that online news dissemination strongly influences opinion formation in social media.

现行《著作权法》中的广播权与信息网络传播权已经存在规范漏洞,而以电信传输网、广播电视传输网、计算机互联网相互融通为代表的三网融合技术使问题进一步加剧,形成“一个传播终端、六类传播行为、三种法律定性”的复杂局面.其直接原因表现为传播技术的发展融合,但深层次分析可追溯到技术主义立法路径的弊端.《著作权法(修改草案)》1稿、2稿的“修补型”方案仍不足以应对三网融合带来的问题,因此应借鉴已有的成熟立法例,将广播权与信息网络传播权整合为一项“远程传播权”.     

数字时代版权保护理念的重构——从以复制权为中心到以传播权为中心

"复制"在数字时代遭遇了法律尴尬。临时复制、私人复制、搜索性数字图书馆复制等三类复制行为对版权法提出了挑战。通过一些特定条款的修改无法从根本上解决将来可能出现的新的复制问题。传统的理论多是从合理使用的角度试图为这些复制行为进行辩解,以寻求正当性。本文却换一个视角,直接从根本上讨论版权保护基本理念的改革,认为在信息网络时代版权保护的中心应该从复制权转变为传播权,从而构建以传播权为中心的版权保护制度。

Historical Perspectives on Gender, Security, and Technology: Gathering, Weaving, and Subsistence in Colonial Mission Communities of Bolivia

The present paper brings to the discussion of human risks and rights an analysis of the gendered spheres of labor that developed in the eighteenth-century mission communities of lowland, eastern Bolivia. It argues that the differential work experiences of men and women, their access to technology and to the rewards of their labor, can be explained only by combining sensitivity to gender issues with a contextual framework that takes into account the environment, cultural expectations, and political economy. This historical case study is situated in Chiquitos, one of the Iberian colonial frontiers established in the ecological borderlands between the Andes and Amazonia.

The lore of sexual difference in social and legal discourse on ‘date rape’

Using a framework informed by Foucauldian discourse theory and feminist accounts of sexual difference, this paper investigates the process of attrition in cases initially recorded as rape and in which complainant and suspect are known to each other. Having particular regard to police and prosecutor decision-making in the processing of such cases, the authors consider discourses that utilise conceptions of sexual difference, which work to normalise and privilege cultural assumptions about male desires and conduct in sexual relations. In illuminating the manner in which the traditional binary categories of sexual difference is put to work, the authors argue that socio-legal debates over the phenomenon commonly described as ‘date rape’ have over-simplistically inverted these categories. The authors further argue that this inversion operates to women's detriment and fails to advance a sufficiently nuanced understanding of complex issues implicated in rapes committed against women by men they know. This revised version was published online in November 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.
