Existing research leaves a gap in explaining why African American adolescents do not exhibit more anxiety and depression than
other youth, at the same time that they experience more contextual risk factors. The current study examined the roles of social
support as well as possible mediators self-esteem and ethnic identity (sense of belonging to one’s ethnic group) in reducing
internalizing symptoms in 227 African American adolescents (mean age = 12.55). Structural equation models indicated that self-esteem
and ethnic identity partially mediated the relation between social support and depression. For depression, ethnic identity
accounted for more of the social support effect for males, whereas self-esteem had more impact for females. The mediation
model for anxiety was supported in females, with self-esteem more important than ethnic identity. The results suggest that
ethnic identity and self-esteem function as important links in how social support reduces internalizing symptoms in African
American youth.

This study investigated the responses of 181 participants (87 men, 94 women), from Adelaide, South Australia, to scenarios describing mandatory sentences for perpetrators of a property offense committed in the Northern Territory, Australia. Four scenarios that were randomly distributed varied ethnic identity (White Australian, Aboriginal Australian) and criminal history (first-time offender, third-time offender). Participants completed attitude measures for both mandatory sentencing and capital punishment, a right-wing authoritarianism scale, and a scale concerned with sentencing goals (retribution, deterrence, protection of society, and rehabilitation). Results showed strong effects of attitude toward mandatory sentencing on scenario responses for variables such as perceived responsibility, deservingness, leniency, seriousness, anger and pleasure, and weaker effects of ethnic identity and criminal history. Participants were generally more sympathetic when the offender was an Aboriginal Australian. Results of a multiple regression analysis showed that attitude toward mandatory sentence was predicted by right-wing authoritarianism and by sentencing goals relating to deterrence and the protection of society. 相似文献

African American and European American 4th, 6th, and 8th graders rated the competence of rich and poor children in academics
(i.e., math, science, reading, writing, school grades, smartness), sports, and music. In contrast to middle school students,
4th graders favored the rich in all 3 domains. Youth of both races reported that the rich were more competent in academics
than the poor; these beliefs were especially pronounced among Black youth. White, older, and more affluent students favored
the poor in sports, whereas their counterparts either favored the rich or were egalitarian. No interactions were found between
grade and race or grade and family income. The implications of these beliefs for policy and identity development theory are
discussed.

Despite recent declines in overall sexual activity, sexual risk-taking remains a substantial danger to US youth. Existing research points to athletic participation as a promising venue for reducing these risks. Linear regressions and multiple analyses of covariance were performed on a longitudinal sample of nearly 600 Western New York adolescents in order to examine gender- and race-specific relationships between jock identity and adolescent sexual risk-taking, including age of sexual onset, past-year and lifetime frequency of sexual intercourse, and number of sexual partners. After controlling for age, race, socioeconomic status, and family cohesion, male jocks reported more frequent dating than nonjocks but female jocks did not. For both genders, athletic activity was associated with lower levels of sexual risk-taking; however, jock identity was associated with higher levels of sexual risk-taking, particularly among African American adolescents. Future research should distinguish between subjective and objective dimensions of athletic involvement as factors in adolescent sexual risk.Research Scientist at the Research Institute on Addictions of the University at Buffalo.
