Everett Waters is involved in a wide range of longitudinal research projects and educational programs that advance the Bowlby‐Ainsworth tradition of attachment study. His empirical and theoretical knowledge is far reaching. Here, Waters explores the family law field's hopes and expectations of attachment theory, identifies a number of myths about attachment theory that may influence divorce decision making, and challenges why we ask the questions we do. His views encourage hardened supporters and detractors of attachment theory alike to identify a middle ground where the essence of attachment knowledge might best inform family law practices in divorce and separation matters. 相似文献

In this far‐reaching interview, Allan Schore, renowned scientist, clinical psychologist, and clinical neuropsychologist, considers the place of neuroscience in facilitating developmental knowledge and better decision making in family law matters. He details current science on the neurology of attachment formation, the function of early caregiving relationships, gender, neuroscience perspectives on conflict and family violence, and implications for parenting arrangements. At the meta level, Schore describes the responsibilities of the family law system in promoting the development of the child. On the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, UCLA, Schore is on the editorial staff of 35 journals in various academic and clinical fields. His integration of neuroscience with attachment theory is documented in three seminal volumes, Affect Regulation and the Origin of the Self, Affect Dysregulation and Disorders of the Self , and Affect Regulation and the Repair of the Self, as well as numerous articles and chapters. He has justifiably earned the nickname of “America's Bowlby.” 相似文献

This article gathers diverse attachment specialists in a far reaching conversation about the utility of attachment assessment and theory for complex family law decision making, and reflections on the thorny question, “If I were the judge . . .?” Inge Bretherton, Professor Emerita, Developmental Psychology at Wisconsin University, is one of a few attachment researchers in the Bowlby/Ainsworth tradition to have completed studies in the divorce field. Seligman, a psychoanalyst and clinical psychologist, Solomon, a clinical psychologist and researcher, and Crowell, professor of psychiatry and psychology, take on some large controversies, and offer well over 100 years combined experience of applying attachment knowledge in complex family matters. 相似文献

Contributions of 3 dimensions of parenting (psychological control, warmth, and behavioural control), marital conflict, and attachment style (anxiety and avoidance) to adjustment from early to middle adolescence were assessed. Mediation of marital conflict effects by parenting, and of parenting effects by attachment were examined. Adolescents (n = 175) initially age 13 years reported parenting practices, attachment styles, school grades, self-esteem, and internalizing and externalizing problems twice (T1, T2) 2 years apart. T1 marital conflict was associated with lower self-esteem, more externalizing symptoms, and lower academic achievement at T2, all but the latter mediated by parental warmth. T1 parental psychological control was associated with increases in internalizing symptoms over time, an effect not mediated by attachment insecurity, which contributed independently. T1 parental warmth was associated with decreases in externalizing symptoms and increases in self-esteem over time, the latter mediated by attachment security.Professor of Psychology, Concordia University, Montreal, QC, Canada, H4B 1R6. The purpose of this study was to investigate levels of interpersonal dependency, an indicator of insecure attachment in adulthood,
among batterers court-mandated into domestic violence treatment. The study collected data from 158 batterers beginning treatment
and 25 nonviolent men. Analysis indicated that batterers demonstrated significantly elevated levels of interpersonal dependency,
relative to the nonviolent comparison group. These findings indicate that more research is needed before the role of interpersonal
dependency in the etiology and maintenance of domestic violence can be understood.

When Loving Means Hurting: An Exploration of Attachment and Intimate Abuse In a Community Sample 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Intimate relationship abuse can be understood by considering two critical tenets of attachment. First, attachment fulfills
a basic need for survival. Thus, the tenacity of the attachment bond is independent of relationship quality. Second, individuals
whose attachment needs have been frustrated may strike out violently to regain proximity to the perceived loss of an intimate
partner. We examined how individual differences in attachment were associated with women's and men's relationship abuse. A
telephone survey assessed levels of psychological and physical abuse in 1249 Vancouver residents. Of these, 128 completed
an attachment interview exploring their interpersonal relationships. Hierarchical regressions revealed that attachment variables
contributed significant variance to prediction of both receipt and perpetration of psychological and physical abuse, with
preoccupied attachment acting as an independent predictor. There was no evidence that gender moderated these associations.
The findings suggest that attachment preoccupation in either partner may increase likelihood of abuse in couples. 相似文献

Adolescents and young adults (three age groups: 12–15, 16–19, and 20–28 years) reported their use of parents, and peers to
fulfill attachment functions (proximity-seeking, safe haven, and secure base.) The use of each target figure varied with age
and attachment function. Mothers were an important source of security across this age range. They were used as secure base
consistently more than fathers or peers for all age groups, and regardless of whether or not participants had romantic partners;
but were used less for proximity and safe haven by the two older groups. Best friends were used most and more than others
as a safe haven; but were used less by young adults (vs. early adolescents) and by older adolescents with romantic partners.
Romantic partners were used most and more than others for proximity; but were used less by early adolescents than by older
participants. Fathers were selected less than other targets for all attachment functions. Those with romantic partners turned
to them more than to others, and young adults selected their romantic partners as much as friends for safe haven. Those insecurely
attached to mother turned to her less and to romantic partners more than did those securely attached. Implications for developmental
changes in adolescent attachments are discussed.

This study tested associations between adolescent perceptions of interparental conflict, adolescent attachment security with parents, and adolescent marital expectations and romantic experiences. Participants were 96 early adolescent females from 2 parent families. Insecurity was examined as a mediator of the association between negative perceptions of parental conflict and romantic outcomes. Results supported the mediation model in which adolescents' negative perceptions of parental conflict was associated with insecure attachment with parents, which was in turn associated with negative marital expectations and romantic experiences. Implications for understanding how parent-adolescent and interparental variables influence adolescent marital expectations and romantic experiences are discussed.

A quarter century after his death in 1982, Dwight Macdonald is, unjustly, a largely forgotten man. But for 35 years, from
1940 to 1975, he was America’s leading literary-intellectual journalist and the best-known cultural critic to the general
public. An undogmatic iconoclast and self-professed “revolutionist,” his finest work makes him a worthy descendent of H.L.
Mencken and Edmund Wilson. He is worth remembering.
John Rodden is the author, most recently, of Every Intellectual’s big brother: George Orwell’s Literary Siblings (2007). 相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the development of quality of attachment of adolescents to their parents and siblings during adolescence and the role that gender differences play in this development, using latent growth curve analysis. In 288 families, adolescents reported on their attachment relationships with their parents and siblings. Quality of attachment changes during adolescence, and these changes are influenced by both gender of the adolescent and gender of the attachment figure. Results showed that change in mean level of quality of attachment to mother appeared to be nonlinear for boys, whereas mean level of attachment of adolescent girls to their mothers showed a linear decline. Results for attachment to father were opposite, with a linear decline in quality for boys, and a nonlinear development for girls. Quality of attachment to sibling showed differential development depending on gender composition of the sibling dyad. 相似文献
