Old and very old adults as witnesses: event memory and metamemory

Older people constitute an important category of eyewitnesses. Episodic memory performance in older persons is poorer than in younger adults, but little research has been made on older persons’ metacognitive judgments. Since more persons of advanced age will likely be called upon as witnesses in coming years, it is critical to characterize this population’s metacognitive abilities. We compared event memory metacognition in old adults (66-year-old, n = 74) to very old adults (87 or 90 years old, n = 55). Participants were tested on their memory of a film, using questions with two answer alternatives and the confidence in their answer. As expected, the very old group had a lower accuracy rate than the old group (d = 0.59). The very old group, however, monitored this impairment, since their over-/underconfidence and calibration did not differ from the old group but they displayed a poorer ability to separate correct from incorrect answers (discrimination ability). Possibly, the very old group was able to monitor the level of their over-/underconfidence because they applied general self-knowledge about their memory skills. In contrast, the discrimination of correct from incorrect answers may be more dependent on ability to attend to the features of each retrieved memory.     

A Case for reflexive politics: challenging Luhmann's account of the Political system

This article attempts an internal critique of N. Luhmann's account of the political system. Internal because it takes up the principal tense of system epistemology. Critical because it attempts to situate the potential for utopian politics within that framework which, according to Luhmann, precludes it. The article briefly explores this epistemology, its specific application to the political system and the negative conclusions that are drawn from this account for utopian politics. In order to confront these conclusions, the strategy of the argument is to extract from Luhmann's notion of political theory, as the meta-level of the political system, the possibility to problematize the terms in which the political system casts political questions. In political theory, this article argues, inheres the potential to turn politics reflexive. This in turn both suggusts opportunities for action carrying utopian vision but also leads to a better understanding of what shifts are involved in the social problematic of alternative politics that have shifted away from the framework in which Luhmann sees political possibility circumscribed.

学报编辑工作是人类社会先进文化活动的一部分,其功能是积累和传播人类共同创造的社会先进文化成果。学报编辑工作具有政治性、思想性,反映一定阶段社会集团的利益和愿望。学报编辑工作是一个具有多样性、社会性的文化工程;学报编辑是人类文化创新的调控者;学报编辑是先进文化的策划者、生产者、建设者和创新者。     

Green Light for PPP on German Motorways?

While public–private partnerships (PPPs) have surged worldwide since the 1990s, they have been met with growing skepticism during the last years. A recent revision of Germany’s constitutional rules on motorway construction and observations on the use of PPPs published by both the German and the European Courts of Auditors illustrate this new caution. These two examples fit into a general trend towards a revival of the public sector, which can be summarized under the cross-level umbrella term “publicization.” It would, however, be remiss to replace the uncritical euphoria that once surrounded privatization with a similarly undifferentiated euphoria regarding publicization. Rather, it is crucial to identify the most appropriate solution for the fulfilment of each public task from the “toolbox” of publicization on the one hand and privatization on the other hand in order to ensure the most effective completion of public functions.
