Let's get real: a critical semiotic analysis of Irish print media discourses

In what follows, I critically assess the merits of the relativist and realist positions in the social and human sciences, and argue that the relativisation of truth claims operates to mask relations of power and inequality, and also offers impunity to discursive mystifications denying the existence of both. Alternatively, I argue that the Critical Realist position, with its realist ontology and relativist epistemology, allows for the identification of such structures, and as a consequence of its emphasis on the materiality of discourse, for the identification of mystificatory meaning-making. And I operationalise my argument through critical analysis and commentary on four texts drawn from newspapers across the range for such in Ireland on the related issues of wealth and welfare.

从“重庆周克华案”谈突发事件的舆论引导

维稳处突是新时期公安机关工作的重要内容。作为处置突发事件的主要力量,公安机关在开展处突工作的同时,能否科学有效地引导新闻舆论,对于突发事件最终的处置结果乃至公安机关的整体形象都将起到至关重要的作用。文章结合轰动全国的"重庆周克华案",就突发事件中公安机关的舆论引导策略问题进行分析和探讨,指出公安机关在突发事件中进行有效的舆论引导必须做到现场新闻管理、主动披露信息、统一发布口径、及时反击谣言、充分告知公众等五个方面的工作。

媒体是民主法治的推动者、公平正义的维护者、安定秩序的营造者，与司法公正并称为现代法治社会的两大基石。新的互联网时代，司法与媒体应该构建更加紧密的良性互动机制，科学把握新闻时效性与司法程序性的对立统一、舆论开放性与司法谦抑性的对立统一、正义期待性与现实局限性的对立统一，协同推进法治中国的建设。     

A survey of current social network and online communication provision policies to support law enforcement identify offenders

Online forms of harassment, stalking and bullying on social network and communication platforms are now arguably wide-spread and subject to regular media coverage. As these provision continue to attract millions of users, generating significant volumes of traffic, regulating abuse and effectively reprimanding those who are involved in it, is a difficult and sometimes impossible task. This article collates information acquired from 22 popular social network and communication platforms in order to identify current regulatory gaps. Terms of service and privacy policies are reviewed to assess existing practices of data retention to evaluate the feasibility of law enforcement officials tracking those whose actions breach the law. For each provision, account sign-up processes are evaluated and policies for retaining Internet Protocol logs and user account information are assessed along with the availability of account preservation orders. Finally, recommendations are offered for improving current approaches to regulating social network crime and online offender tracking.

论青少年犯罪与大众传媒

青少年犯罪日益呈现出低龄化、多样化、频发性等特点。其原因主要包括社会因素、家庭因素、学校教育因素。而随着改革开放的不断深入,以及我国加入WTO后经济、文化领域同国际的不断接轨,大众传媒对青少年犯罪的影响越来越直接、深入。本文试从青少年犯罪与大众传媒的关系这一角度谈谈其原因及控制。

随着互联网以及微媒体的发展,媒体素养已成为公安民警必备素质之一。在公安民警媒体素养教学中,以警务工作现场警媒关系管理、危机事件舆情引导、公安网络宣传及新闻发布会为主要形式的情境模拟训练,具有参与性、针对性、实效性强的优势。公安民警媒体素养情境模拟训练的成效,取决于培训基本场景和角色设计、培训互动以及培训实施过程的安排是否合理。     

Hungary’s radical right 2.0

In the digital age, the Internet is an important factor in the emergence and success of political parties and social movements. Despite growing evidence that extremists of all stripes use the virtual world for their purposes, research on this topic still lacks a wide array of empirical data, case studies, and theoretical background. In particular, Facebook, as the most important social networking site, is a new tool for political parties and movements to mobilize followers. The article explores how the extreme-right party Jobbik uses this tool more successfully than other Hungarian parties or Western European extreme-right parties. Comparing the growth in followers highlights this success, and a look at how it generates likes helps to explain it. The article argues that Jobbik uses Facebook in a sophisticated way and suggests that this “likable” attitude helps to attract young and first-time voters.     

Dealmaking Disrupted: The Unexplored Power of Social Media in Negotiation

While social media has had profound effects in many realms, the theory and practice of negotiation have remained relatively untouched by this potent phenomenon. In this article, we survey existing research in this area and develop a broader framework for understanding the wider roles and effects of social media on negotiation. Through a series of detailed case studies, we explore how social media can drive important negotiations either off the rails or toward beneficial outcomes—and how savvy practitioners can harness this often‐neglected factor to their advantage, or else find themselves outmaneuvered by more digitally sophisticated parties. Applying the lens of the “3D negotiation” approach developed by Lax and Sebenius, we describe a number of potentially decisive roles that social media can play to enhance actions by negotiators “at the table,” with respect to deal design, and “away from the table.” In this 3D context, we show how social media can help negotiators learn about their counterparts (interests, perceptions, relationships, and networks), directly and indirectly influence the parties, mobilize supporters, and neutralize potential opponents. We show that being proactive—both in cultivating digital influence or allies and in building resilience to threats across online information ecosystems—can provide critical advantages for negotiators navigating a hyperconnected world. We develop a preliminary framework to help identify the full range of platforms, tools, and methodologies appropriate for the use of social media in negotiations, including network mapping software and open‐source intelligence techniques. Throughout our analysis, we stress the importance of ethical and privacy considerations.
