Looking from South Africa to the World: A Story of Identity for our Times

The article is a consideration of the question of identity in South Africa, and also in a global context. Just as South Africa has looked to the world in order to understand its place, so too the world might look to South Africa to illuminate patterns less immediately visible elsewhere. Far from being unrepresentative in the apartheid period, South Africa was the ‘state of exception’ that incarnated and concentrated global realities; equally in the current era the reciprocal relations between the South African and the global evoke haunting concerns. The article begins with a consideration of the ‘classic’ generation of anti-apartheid activists, including figures such as Nelson Mandela and Bram Fischer, as they fashioned a new sense of South African identity. Yet it goes on to consider what happens when the classic period is over, and older definitions and oppositions are no longer available. Here the navigations of fiction, both in South Africa and elsewhere, become significant, and the article examines the work of writers from Gordimer, Coetzee and Ndebele, to Caryl Phillips and W. G. Sebald. It ends with a contemplation of the current period, nearly twenty years after the democratic transition in South Africa. In the era of the Marikana massacre and other pressing developments, both music and fiction open up some of the ambiguities and obligations. Drawing on Agamben, I suggest the intrinsic mutuality of the ‘home’ and the ‘foreign’ in establishing a more promising—and challenging—sense of belonging and identity both in South Africa and the world.

Long Peace or Long War: A Conflict Resolution Perspective

Since the end of the 1980s, both the incidence and severity of violent conflicts and of domestic and international wars have declined globally. These declines are attributable to the convergence of many developments that help prevent, limit, and stop large-scale violence, and the author suggests that those developments persist. Consequently, he suggests that the recent U.S. engagement in wars and recent surges in terrorist attacks are limited spikes in violence that can be overcome. The author discusses how the current violent events may be in part a consequence of behaviors of the U.S. government and other governmental and nongovernmental organizations that are contrary to the major developments that contribute to global peace and cooperation. Governments and peoples acting in concert with those ongoing changes can help reduce the current mass violence.

Deshalb stehen Ansprüche auf finanzielle Beteiligung der einzelnen Wohnungseigentümer (hier: anteiliger Aufwandersatzanspruch eines Wohnungseigentümers nach § 1014 ABGB, der die Errichtungskosten als rechtsgesch?ftlich bestellter Unterbevollm?chtigter des WE-Verwalters vorfinanziert hat) nur der teilrechtsf?higen Eigentümergemeinschaft zu, die organschaftlich durch den WE-Verwalter vertreten wird. Der vorfinanzierende Wohnungseigentümer hingegen ist dazu nicht aktiv legitimiert.     

Evangelical Protestantism and foreign policy in the United States after September 11

Much that has been written on evangelicals in the United States concerns their impact on domestic politics. But the election of George W. Bush has resulted in a new importance for the relationship between evangelicals and US foreign policy. This has become particularly clear following the 11 September 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Three issues deserve further study. One is evangelicals’ attitude to Islam. The second involves the relationship between evangelicals and Israel. The third concerns the stance of evangelicals towards war with Iraq. Through an examination of these three issues, Durham explores a number of important ­questions, ranging from the relationship of evangelicals’ theology and their politics to their partly supportive, partly critical attitude towards an administration itself led by an evangelical. Many evangelicals see the ‘war against terror’ as a war against Islam and unreservedly approve of Israeli policy, and many supported the launch of war in Iraq. Yet evangelicalism is not a monolith and, with regard to its disputes over how to respond to the ‘threat’ of Islam or what view to take of the Israel–Palestine conflict, Durham offers new insights into a powerful voting bloc and source of pressure within US politics.     

‘Ireland of the welcomes’? racism and anti-racism in nineteenth-century Ireland

Irish society, North and South, has been slow to develop a social awareness and legal framework in relation to racism. This has resulted, in the main, from an unwillingness to admit to the presence of racism in Irish history and culture. Yet an examination of Irish society at the time of the visits of two black abolitionists to the country Olaudah Equiano in 1791 and Frederick Douglass in 1845—reveals deep currents of racism in both instances. The attempt by Belfast merchant Waddell Cunningham, who had made his fortune through the provisioning of slave plantations in the Caribbean, to establish a slave-trading company in Belfast in 1786 is a case in point. And, in the mid-nineteenth century, the Young Irelanders, a radical and militant nationalist movement, viewed national liberation as more pressing than the abolition of slavery. At the same time, both Equiano and Douglass noted the warm welcome they received, the former from anti-slavery activists, and the latter from such global players in the international abolitionist scene as Daniel O'Connell. Rolston concludes that there is nothing mysterious in contemporary Irish racism and anti-racism. Both have deep historical roots and are ultimately explained by Ireland's complex relationship to colonization: colonized itself, while at the same time intimately involved in colonizing others through the key roles played by Irish people throughout the British empire.     

嗜肾型鸡传染性支气管炎W93株活疫苗的研究及其S1基因的克隆与序列测定

利用鸡胚分离法由发生肾病变型传染性支气管炎 (IB)的病鸡分离到嗜肾型传染性支气管炎病毒 (NIBV)W株 ;再通过SPF鸡胚连续传代 ,获得了NIBV疫苗毒株W93;继而借助RT PCR法扩增了其S1基因 ,并测定了S1基因的核苷酸序列 ,分析了与相关毒株间的同源性。结果显示 ,W93株在鸡胚中的病毒产量达 10 7.8EID50 /0 .1mL ,适用于所有日龄的雏鸡 ;W93S1基因的核苷酸序列与马萨诸塞型的M4 1株、H52 株和H12 0 株的同源性很高 ,分别为 96 .9%、96 .8%和 97.1%。表明 ,W93可作为制备IB弱毒疫苗的毒株     

Wirksamkeit einer vor Inkrafttreten des MRG abgeschlossenen Wertsicherungsvereinbarung; Novation

Eine im Abschlusszeitpunkt wirksame Mietzins- und Wertsicherungsvereinbarung bleibt weiter wirksam. Dieser Weitergeltung alter zinsrechtlicher Bestimmungen steht § 16 Abs 9 MRG nicht entgegen. Eine in einem Hauptmietvertrag vor dem 1. 1. 1982 und somit vor Inkrafttreten des MRG geschlossene zul?ssige Wertsicherungsvereinbarung bleibt wirksam und ist nicht auf ein überschreiten der Angemessenheitsgrenze des § 16 Abs 1 MRG hin überprüfbar.     

从“注释”看《马克思恩格斯全集》中文第二版《资本论》的编辑工作

《马克思恩格斯全集》中文第二版是中国人首次独立编辑的马克思恩格斯著作的全集版。收录《资本论》的《马克思恩格斯全集》中文第二版第44、45、46卷,编辑质量比《马克思恩格斯全集》中文第一版第23、24、25卷有很大提高。但由于没有利用（或没有充分重视）MEGA2/Ⅱ/10、MEGA2/Ⅱ/13和MEGA2/Ⅱ/15的注释成果,新版《资本论》也存在重大缺陷。有必要在充分利用MEGA2/Ⅱ/10、MEGA2/Ⅱ/13和MEGA2/Ⅱ/15的基础上,编辑出版《资本论》的新版本。
