A TURNING POINT FOR GUOHUA?: XU BEIHONG AND TRANSFORMATIVE ENCOUNTERS WITH THE SOCIALIST SPIRIT, 1933–1953

Abstract

This article investigates a transformative encounter between the Chinese artist Xu Beihong (徐悲鴻 1895–1953) and audiences in the Soviet Union during his 1933–1934 exhibitions of Chinese art in Europe. While Xu was exchanging perspectives and addressing questions about Chinese painting, a misreading of one of his paintings sparked in him a reconsideration of content and form that eventually led to the creation of some of the earliest Socialist realist ink-and-color paintings in China. This addition to his repertoire is arguably more significant to his legacy than his most popular works because of the way it heralded the coming Socialist realist evolution in guohua (國畫 national painting) and the manner in which Xu’s choices would meet the ideological needs of the Communist Party well before it secured authority over the direction of China’s arts. Special attention is paid to situating Xu’s personal work vis-à-vis Republican and revolutionary art and explaining how the concurrent political milieu paved the way for both the prestige of his art in popular and cultural memory and the unprecedented stature of his art education methodologies in China’s revolutionary times.

Groups and Deliberation

We present a group‐based approach to the study of deliberation. Deliberation occurs in groups, yet many studies of deliberation do not take the group as a unit of analysis. We argue that group composition and the attendant social dynamics to which they give rise are an important aspect of deliberation. We offer several examples of ways to study these effects, including the interaction of gender composition and the group's decision rule in the context of an experimental study of decisions about justice, the effect of racial composition in simulated juries, and the effect of ideological composition in local meetings. We examine the consequences of these factors on a variety of outcomes, including individuals' private opinion, individuals' behaviour, and group decisions. In conclusion we discuss the implications that group effects have for empirical and normative theories of deliberation.

浅析宗教与社会主义社会的良性互动关系

社会主义社会要容纳宗教的存在,是因为:在社会主义社会,一方面宗教赖以存在的自然根源、认识根源和社会根源还将长期存在,另一方面,宗教的状况已经发生了根本的变化。宗教能够与社会主义社会的政治制度、经济建设和文化建设相适应。从宗教与社会主义社会相适应的规律、公民的宗教信仰自由是权利和义务的统一体、我国管理宗教事务的方式和保持宗教政策的连续性和稳定性来看,依法治教是实现宗教与社会主义社会良性互动关系的必然要求。     

关于社会主义政治文明建设的几个理论问题

社会主义政治文明是一个以政治 (法律 )制度文明为核心的文明体系。人民当家作主是社会主义政治文明的本质要求 ,是社会主义国家政权性质的根本体现 ,是坚持党的领导和依法治国的出发点和归宿 ,也是社会主义政治文明建设的价值指向和目的所在。社会主义政治文明建设的切入点是加强制度建设。制度建设要以完善和创新党内民主制度为先导 ,以党内民主推动和促进人民民主 ;要以完善和创新人民民主制度为基础 ,以人民民主规定和推动党内民主 ;要以建立和健全完备的社会主义法制为武器 ,保障党内民主和人民民主 ;要以适合我国国情为前提 ,建设具有中国特色的社会主义政治 (法律 )制度。     

论新世纪社会主义先进文化建设的主要任务

加入世贸组织后,中国融入新的经济与社会格局,文化建设面临重大机遇和挑战。纵观全局,与高潮迭起的经济建设相比,文化发展明显滞后。有效地解决这个问题,就是目前中国社会主义先进文化建设的主要任务。
