Manipulating the Census: Ethnic Minorities in the Nationalizing States of Central Asia* 1

Even though self-critical dealing with the past has not been an official criterion for joining the EU, the founding of the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance, and Research and the Holocaust conference in Stockholm at the beginning of 2000 seem to have generated informal standards of confronting and exhibiting the Holocaust in the context of “Europeanization of Memory.” Comparative analysis shows that post-Communist museums dealing with the World War II period perform in the context of those informal standards. Both the Jasenovac Memorial Museum in Croatia and the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising in Banská Bystrica were founded in the Communist era and played an important role in supporting the founding myths of the two countries. Both were subjected to historical revisionism during the 1990s. In the current exhibitions from 2004/2006, both memorial museums stress being part of Europe and refer, to “international standards” of musealization, while the Jasenovac memorial claims to focus on “the individual victim.” But stressing the European dimension of resistance and the Holocaust obscures such key aspects as the civil war and the responsibility of the respective collaborating regime.     

The American friends service committee and Nixon's China policy

This study investigates the influence of the American Friends Service Committee (a Quaker lobbying group) on the policy of detente pursued by the Nixon Administration in dealing with the People's Republic of China. Nixon's Quaker family background is viewed as a link between A.F.S.C. lobbying efforts after 1965 and President Nixon's decision to change U.S. policy toward mainland China. The Quakers were not directly responsible for the Nixon‐Kissinger initiative, but through its lobbying activities in Washington, at Harvard University, and elsewhere, they did help to create a climate of opinion which made acceptable a shift in U.S. China policy.     

International Constructions of National Memories: The Aims and Effects of Foreign Donors' Support for Genocide Remembrance in Rwanda

Abstract

Commemoration of the victims of conflict is a characteristic national act of post-conflict statebuilding in which the significance and ownership of memorials is typically contested. In the case of post-genocide Rwanda, such contestation is overlain with international agendas and influences. Certain international donors supported memorialization as part of programmes to aid societal reconstruction and reconciliation and to prevent conflict. Studies of international contributions to genocide memorials, especially the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre, reveal tensions in this agenda, which seeks to construct both national identity and an imagined ‘international community’ and serves to extend the remit of international actors.

探寻俗赋的流变遗踪——简论敦煌俗赋与后世文学

两汉以来的俗赋到唐五代时有了新的发展,出现了一批故事性强、语言浅显、亦庄亦谐、娱乐性的作品。这种俗赋虽因其封闭于敦煌藏经洞而不为人知,但作为一种传统文体却并未停滞不前,它仍随着时代的发展有了新的传承和应用。通过考察唐五代之后的俗赋对变文说唱、话本小说、杂剧戏曲、通俗类书等方面的流变影响,以此可探寻和揭示俗赋与后世文学的关系。     

论唐代"王孟"诗风对法式善诗歌创作的影响

法式善是乾嘉时期秉承唐代王孟诗风的重要诗人。乾隆盛世的诗学导向和淡泊的个性,成就了法式善以清雅见长的诗风。他在致力于对唐代王孟一派的摹写的同时,也在某种程度上表现出师法杜甫、白居易和晚唐诗风的诗歌倾向。正因为如此,在他那些熔铸着人生际遇、人文关怀和审美趣味的诗歌中,我们能够看到他在追踪王孟一派时,襟怀颇为包容,表现出了在唐诗影响下创作的多样性。这种多样性正是法式善作为清代诗人的独特价值所在。
