Genealogies of horror: three stories of slave-women,motherhood, and murder in the Americas

ABSTRACT

This article examines three cases of infanticide committed by slave women in the Americas – Margaret Garner (1856) of Ohio, Ignácia (1868) of Paraná, Brazil, and Justina (1878) of Rio de Janeiro. The article argues that each woman sought to dislodge their own as well as their children's place in what I term slavery's ‘genealogy of horror’, making the act of killing their children into an expression of black female agency, love, and insurgence against slavery. The cases of Justina and Ignácia's, I argue, provide a counternarrative to the myth of Brazil's genteel and harmonious slavery, propagated throughout the nineteenth century, by exposing the violence and desperation in which slave women and their progeny lived. In the second half of the article, I examine how cases of infanticide were depicted and used in the nineteenth-century abolitionist poetry of Brazilian poet Castro Alves and noted African American writer Frances Harper.     

‘Cultures of healing’: spirituality,interdependence and resistance in the African diaspora

ABSTRACT

Concepts of healing and spirituality have remained crucial to generating agency and empowerment for both black women and black men, especially in their diasporic displacement from Africa to the US. Healing has been consistently deployed to fight against the systemic racism and sexism that has pervaded and continues to persist in the lives of African diasporic subjects. Placing the discussion of healing within the current debates about interdependence and spirituality, the paper traces the notion back to its African roots and enslavement times, and attempts to delineate a genealogy of healing up to the present that grounds interdependence and interconnectedness within an ‘ethics of resistance’.     

体外耐氟喹诺酮类鸡毒霉形体gyrA基因的突变特征分析

按常规方法提取了鸡毒霉形体参考株S6 10 、疫苗株F14 8及在氟喹诺酮类药物压力下筛选出来的耐药株的基因组DNA ,扩增了各菌株DNA旋转酶 gyrA基因片段 ,并进行了克隆、测序 ,利用DNAsis软件对测序结果进行分析。结果表明 ,S6 10 和F14 8在恩诺沙星或环丙沙星压力下均筛选出不同程度的耐药菌 ,而且恩诺沙星致鸡毒霉形体发生耐药性突变的几率高于环丙沙星 ,S6 10株耐药突变频率高于F14 8;S6 10 筛选出来的耐药菌株发生突变的位置在DNA旋转酶GyrA亚基的第 83位 (相对于大肠埃希氏菌GyrA亚基中的位置 ,以下同 )和第 87位上 ,取代模式分别为Ser→Ile、Glu→Gln ,另外 1株高水平耐药株 (Se10 ,MIC≥ 12 8)在第 10 3位也发生了氨基酸取代 (Ile→Val) ;F14 8筛选出来的耐药菌株只在DNA旋转酶GyrA亚基的第 87位发生了突变 (Glu→Gly/Gln)。

耐氟喹诺酮类药物大肠埃希氏菌基因突变的MAMA-PCR检测

采用MAMA-PCR法对72株已知突变菌株的突变情况进行了检测。结果,有2种gyrA 83位突变:TCG→TTG和TCG缺失;4种gyrA 87位突变:GAC→AAC、GAC→GGC、GAC→TAC和GAC→CAC;1种parC 80位突变:AGC→ATC以及4种parC 84位突变:GAA→AAA、GAA→GCA、GAA→GGA和GAA→GTA。采用同样的方法,对38株未知突变菌株的检测结果显示,gyrA 83、gyrA 87、parC 80和parC 84位的突变检出的正确率分别为97．4％、94．7％、81．6%和94．7％。结果表明,MAMA-PCR有望成为监测耐氟喹诺酮类药物大肠埃希氏菌的分子生物学常规方法。

The Global Gold Mining Industry,Junior Firms,and Civil Society Resistance in Guatemala

Over the past two decades, the gold mining industry has increased its activity in Latin America. Growing contestation and conflict around gold mining projects have accompanied this shift. This article draws from the case of Guatemala, where metal exploration has grown by 1,000 per cent since 1998, to illustrate how the proliferation of small ‘junior’ firms – together with neoliberal investment policies and suitability of mineralisation – set the stage for fly‐by‐night gold mining and, therefore, intense resistance from host communities to mineral development.

Foucault and Liberalism: Rationality,Revolution, Resistance

Abstract

In 1978 and 1979, the concept of governmentality was introduced by Foucault in his lectures at the Collège de France. Foucault finds the genealogical origin of this concept in the Christian figure of the shepherd. From this starting-point, he then embarks on a eulogy of liberalism, in stark contrast to the Marxist critique of political economy. These two grand narratives of modern liberalism differ markedly in their political and philosophical presuppositions. The latter, rooted in the tradition of natural law, is directed towards revolution. The former, rooted in the tradition of English radicalism, is directed towards resistance. Beyond their different reconstructions of liberalism, however, the article concludes by showing how these two narratives, can in fact be combined in a politically fruitful way.
