Multiculturalism in South African soap operas

Abstract

This article explores the multicultural dimensions within the texts of three South African soap operas (soaps). It uses text analysis and interviews as a methodology to expose the intricate web of influences that are all part of the fabric of a South African soap.

The text and discursive analysis are based on Systemic Functional Linguistics Theory of Halliday. The analysis of the texts proceeds from a pre-interpretation stage, through an analysis stage and into a revisit or re-interpretative stage. The creators of the texts as well as commercial bias are seen as politico-economic and cultural influences which may have direct bearing on the texts and are therefore interrogated. The findings confirm no multicultural model for South African soaps and show correlation between commercial interests and homogenised South African stereotypes.     

Valor de uso y espacio urbano: la ciudad como eje central de la conformación política,cultural y simbólica de las sociedades

This article outlines a theoretical proposal intended to understand the concept of use value applied to the study of the city and the urban space, in their origins and development. Based on Henri Lefebvre's views, the main argument of this work is that the city initially arises as use value. According to Bolívar Echeverría and Gilbert Durand approaches, the article claims that use value not only is material, signic and semiotic, but also symbolic. It is argued that the symbolic plays a crucial role in the construction of cities, just as important as economy and politics. A case study is carried out with the aim of suggesting a concurrence of theoretical interpretations ranging from historical materialism to symbolic hermeneutics. The author concludes that the city and the ordering of its urban space are major hubs around which societies are organized.     

Information Accessibility for Public Health Emergencies-A Case Study of Information Accessibility during the New Coronavirus Outbreak

Barrier-free information construction has not been included in the information disclosure system for public emergencies in China. This makes it difficult for obstacle groups to obtain government information timely. By contrast, social forces, sign language videos and online accessible mini programs all give quick responds, which to some extent, bridge the information gap during the pandemic. This phenomenon is caused by the insufficient construction of information accessibility within the legal system, and the lack of popularization of accessibility concepts. The corresponding departments should improve the legal system of information accessibility by incorporating it into the information disclosure system for public emergencies in China. This will speed up the construction of modern public cultural service systems, promote the development of TV sign language hosting, and improve awareness of accessibility in science and technology to promote the design standards and principles of network accessibility and improve the dissemination of barrier-free information, hence meeting the information needs of barrier-free groups for major public emergencies.     

公示语的汉英翻译原则及翻译策略——以南宁市公示语英译为例

公示语是公开面对公众的标识语、提示语、指示语、警示语的统称。它是一种常见于公共场所的实用性文体，其目的在于把各种必要的、有用的信息传达给公众，以实现其相应的应用示意功能。翻译公示语是为了用目的语有效地传递源语信息，使公示语译文实现与源语同样的功能和目的。因此，公示语翻译是否规范非常重要，它关系到译文能否准确地传递源语信息、是否会影响对外交流、甚至是否会影响一个城市甚至国家的形象。本文以南宁市公示语英译为例，探讨德国功能派翻译理论的目的论对公示语英译的理论指导意义及公示语翻译策略。

试论企业法人主体资格证明标志

法人的民事权利能力与民事行为能力同时产生理论,决定了现行法律法规将营业执照的颁发视为企业法人成立的标志,但现行司法实践的发展,同时又将企业法人营业执照被吊销后至其注销登记前视为企业法人主体未消灭,这一矛盾最终导致理论与实践的重大冲突。这就要求重构企业法人主体产生的标志:在观念上将企业法人的登记与营业执照的颁发分别作为企业法人主体权利能力与行为能力获得的证明。
