日据时期台湾作家的祖国之旅不仅增强了他们的民族认同感,而且具有扩大视野,从祖国接受现代文明成分的意义。赖和兄弟从其厦门经验中认知医治国人精神病症的重要性;谢春木对于“现代化”兼具“接受”和“反思”两端,发现中国大陆作为半殖民地,与台湾一样存在着殖民性与现代性的纠葛与悖论。大陆经验使台湾作家更多从五四新文学中吸取营养,促进了台湾新文学的兴起和发展,如周定山与中国现代文学三大主题和鲁迅风格有相当的契合;王白渊在“艺术”和“革命”之间最终选择了后者,而这是诸多中国现代文学作家的共同“宿命”。

Industrial requiem: management,labor, and investment at the Lowell Machine Shop

In the 1890s, a desire for greater control of shop floor work induced Lowell Machine Shop management to mechanize components of the machine tool manufacturing process. This effort resulted in the removal of the firm’s skilled workers, who were an experienced source of ingenuity and, as others have shown, a community that diffused technical knowledge between firms. At the same time, the firm began paying larger dividends to shareholders instead of investing in the research and development of new products. These decisions damaged the firm, and shortly after the turn of the century, manufacturing operations at the Lowell plant ceased. Because in this period the Lowell Machine Shop was one of the most important capital goods firms in the United States, both in terms of national market share and reputation, this case raises questions about the degree to which specialty producers retained skilled workers and paid dividends.

Modern post-colonial approaches to citizenship: Kwame Nkrumah’s political thought on Pan-Africanism

This project of critical citizenship studies and comparative political theory utilizes a framework of multiple modernities in order to deeply explore the ontological foundations and complexities of a non-Western conception of citizenship and nationhood: political pan-Africanism. It does so through a study of the political thought of Kwame Nkrumah, a deeply influential political theorist and actor, in the context of the Gold Coast’s struggle for independence and in the initial years of Ghanaian post-colonialism. How did Nkrumah conceive of Pan-Africanist citizenship and nationhood in political and ontological terms? How does this relate to both modern conceptions of citizenship as tied to the nation-state and traditional Ghanaian conceptions of citizenship and belonging? After considering these questions, this paper explores how Nkrumah’s vision of Pan-Africanism was influenced by, yet contradicted central tenets of, Western political thought and modernity. It explores the theoretical and practical tensions inherent between this non-Western conception of the nation and the dominance of aspects of ‘Western’ modernity. Exploring these questions through the lens of Nkrumah’s political thought offers an Afrocentric study in an effort to strengthen African historical agency and to deparochialize citizenship studies and political theory.     

Peripheral modernity and anti-colonial nationalism in Java: economies of race and gender in the constitution of the Indonesian national teleology

This analysis investigates the limits of colonial modernity in the 20th century Dutch East Indies at a time that coincided with the building of the Indonesian national project. I am interested in the constitution of the national teleology as an inexorable socio-political project, deploying specific racial and gendered economies. As a locus of investigation I choose the literary narratives of two celebrated Indonesian intellectuals (and participants in the anti-colonial struggle), Pramoedya’s Buru Quartet and Mangunwijaya’s Durga/Umayi. Were the impulses of anti-colonial resistance intrinsically national in their orientation? Through what erasures and re-appropriations has the nationalism/modernity paradigm become the medium of decolonisation?     

民族性视野下的中国早期乡土文学之现代性求取

中国早期乡土文学是在启蒙理性的追求、时代的批判与俗世的阐述大背景中展开的。批判性主题的展现、理性价值的求取、乡土文化隐喻是早期乡土文学现代性特征的主要表证。早期乡土文学是乡土作家们带着理性的审视、反省态度进行文学创作的结果,是在民族性视野中"人的发现"启迪基础上的"故乡的发现"。比照30年代以后文学发展的历程,可以说,中国文学"走出中世纪"的标志是早期乡土作家站在民族性认同的话语背景中,在创作乡土文学时对文学现代性的求取。     

科学理性、道德冷漠与现代性——鲍曼对现代性两副面孔的反思

齐格蒙·鲍曼通过对大屠杀的研究对现代性进行了深刻的反思。鲍曼认为，德国纳粹针对犹太人的大屠杀不仅仅是犹太人历史上的一个悲惨事件，也并非德意志民族的一次反常行为，而是现代性本身的固有可能。科学的理性计算精神、技术的道德中立地位、社会管理的工程化趋势，正是这些现代化的本质要素，使得像大屠杀这样灭绝人性的惨剧成为设计者、执行者和受害者密切合作的集体行动。从鲍曼对当代的历史和社会结构极为深刻的分析中，我们可以感受到后现代理论对政治和历史研究的巨大的冲击力。
