India and Indonesia: Reliable Partners in an Uncertain Asia

The India-Indonesia strategic engagement is both a reflection of as well as a response to the changing politico-strategic landscape of Asia during the post-Cold War era and the first decade of the twenty-first century. The partnership has emerged out of growing concerns about prevailing strategic uncertainty in Asia and the mutual desire of benefitting from the Asian stories of growth, integration, and development. Moreover, two decades of the multi-pronged strategies of engagement under India's Look East Policy have not only broadened the canvas of the engagement but also placed the relationship in the broader strategic context of Asia, a discourse once advocated aggressively by the two leaders of the two countries—Nehru and Sukarno.     

Labour Contractors and Global Production Networks: The Case of India’s Auto Supply Chain

Research on labour in global production networks has raised serious questions about the role played by labour contractors. This article uses a case study of automotive components production in north India to show how labour contractors assist firms to adapt to the rigours of competition in supply chains. We demonstrate that a regional contract labour system has enabled employers to keep wages low, increase firm flexibility, offload the burden of monitoring and controlling workers and undermine collective bargaining and trade union rights. These problems further expose serious weaknesses in the implementation and enforcement of labour laws in India.     

Banking regulation (amendment) ordinance, 2017: A resolute ordinance?

This paper is a write up on the recent Banking Regulation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2017, which is yet another step in a series of initiatives taken to resolve stressed assets in the Indian banking system. An ordinance to this effect was promulgated over a “bad bank” idea as such an entity would itself be a warehouse of stressed assets and not a resolution mechanism. The paper provides an overview of stressed assets, aim of the ordinance, immediate steps taken by RBI after the promulgation of ordinance, and the looming questions that still remain pertaining to resolution of stressed assets.     

关于孟加拉国卡西族社会经济特点的研究

本文提供了关于孟加拉国卡西族的原始资料。此项研究目的在于揭示孟加拉国卡西族的社会经济特点和其家庭的生活水平。锡尔赫特地区中两块区域被选作此次研究的试验地。每个区域中共有 4 0个家庭被调查取样。结果显示 38%的家庭没有自已的土地 ,其中只有7%的家庭是大家庭。绝大多数的小农场主和他的家庭成员都没受过正式的教育。卡西族人家庭主要从事的都是农业 ,并且生活水平都不高。有一些卡西族人家庭是从商的。他们面临着不少问题 ,不断增加的政府发展计划正逐渐改善他的生活水平。
