This study reviews the causes of sudden death of 66 schizophrenic patients who presented to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) for the State of Maryland over a 3-year period from 1994 through 1996. We identified an increased incidence of suicide compared with the general population of OCME cases. This observation is consistent with reports by other investigators. The majority of the deaths were the result of natural diseases, mostly atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Accidents, suicides, and 1 homicide were also present in this group.  相似文献

The method proposed by Grove [1] for comparing measurements made on control and recovered fragments is extended to deal with the possibility that the recovered fragments may originally have come from more than one source. The cases of two and four recovered fragments are examined in detail. Simulation results are given which show that the discriminatory power of the method varies with the number of sources and with the distribution of the fragments over those sources. How do we move from identifying ethical principles to enhancing development practice? How can donors and NGOs move beyond the reporting of technical outputs to explore less tangible aspects of their health projects: contributions to rebuilding trust, promoting social cohesion, and enhancing good governance at community level? This article considers these questions in relation to health and peace-building activities in conflicted settings. It describes difficulties facing practitioners and donors seeking to undertake health and peace work, in particular focusing on the lack of appropriate tools for screening, monitoring, and evaluating projects. It critiques the logical framework, a tool commonly used in project planning, monitoring, and evaluation, and considers it alongside a new tool, the Health and Peace Building Filter, which has been designed to reflect on health programming in fragile or conflicted settings. The authors argue that such tools can help to move us beyond focusing on inputs and outputs to examining processes, relationships, and the indirect consequences of aid programmes.  相似文献

Conducted electrical weapons (CEWs) deliver short high-voltage, low current energy pulses to temporarily paralyze a person by causing muscular contraction. The narrative of this article is a methodical analysis on acute pathophysiological changes within the central nervous system, cardiovascular, neuroendocrine, sympatho-adrenergic and muskuloskeletal system which can occur after application of conducted electrical weapons on human subjects. The results are based on wide-ranging literature analysis and source studies. The majority of the recent scientific publications on humans classify the health risks of an appropriate use of the CEWs device as minor. However, there still is an uncertainty about possible side-effects of these devices. Therefore medical supervision with human application is advised.  相似文献

The present study examines the extent to which Asian/white late adolescents are an at-risk group whose identity development is significantly different from Asian or white identity development. The centrality of race and ethnicity to Asian/white identity formation is also explored. Fifty-one Asian/white, Asian, and white college students were administered Marcia's Identity Interview (1966), with a section on race, and Mar's Asian Values Scale (1988). Asian/white subjects did not possess significantly different identity statuses than Asians or whites. Asian/white subjects held values similar to Asians on the Asian Values Scale, but rated race as significantly less important in identity formation than did Asian subjects. In some contexts, then, Asian/white subjects may not be as at-risk as previously thought. In the present study, Asian/whites had positively resolved racial issues such that race was no longer a matter of daily contention.This research was done as part of the requirement for the B.A. with Honors degree in Psychology from Amherst College.Current research interests include cross-cultural psychology and family relationships.  相似文献
