Acknowledging the difficulty in arriving at an accurate estimate of the number of Aboriginal children removed from their families during the twentieth century, I argue that the greatest accuracy will flow from working with specialist scholars of small areas. Their studies, many of which already exist, draw on archival, documentary, oral and community sources. Such locally specialised knowledge is necessary to unravel official population figures and shifting definitions of Aboriginality, sometimes deliberately intended to deceive. Community-based knowledge is needed to expand upon the files of removed children, at least half of which, in Wiradjuri country, are missing or inaccessible. Lastly I consider some of the implications of the discussion in relation to a "Stolen Generations Tribunal". 相似文献

Surveys typically characterize lay knowledge of eyewitness factors as low and highly variable. However, there are notable
differences across methodologies, samples, and individual factors. To examine these differences systematically, we took a
meta-analytic approach to reviewing the findings of 23 surveys assessing lay knowledge of eyewitness issues. Our analyses
examined the beliefs of 4,669 respondents. Overall, respondents correctly agreed with survey items approximately two-thirds
of the time. Results revealed significant differences in performance as a function of variable type, question format, and
over time. We found few differences as a function of sample type, publication status, or jurisdiction. Although performance
varied, a majority of lay respondents achieved “correct” consensus for as many as 11 of the 16 items included in this review. 相似文献

Women who enter college with a sexual victimization (SV) history may be at particular risk for deleterious outcomes including maladaptive alcohol involve posttraumatic stress, and re-victimization. Further, pre-college SV may be an impediment for the achievement of academic mile and may negatively impact the transition into college. Recent work shows that the method of coercion used in SV may be an important predictor of post-victimization outcomes. As such, the identification of pathways between type of SV and outcomes can aid in early identification and intervention for those at highest risk. In a sample of newly-matriculated female college students, this study examined unique outcomes associated with two specific types of SV, (1) threats/use of physical force (Force SV) or (2) incapacitation (Incap SV). Participants completed assessments of SV, alcohol involvement, posttraumatic stress, and academic outcomes at 6 time-points over their first year of college. Results showed differential outcomes based on pre-matriculation exposure to Force SV or Incap SV. Women with Incap SV were higher on problem drinking indices whereas women with Force SV were at greater risk for re-victimization and marginally more PTSD symptoms. Having a history of either type of SV predicted attrition, but there were no differences when comparing Force SV to Incap SV. Overall, results from this study support the utility of delineating SV experiences by method of coercion, and point to the potential of highlighting different outcomes in tailored intervention programs. 相似文献

In the context of the customary and reasonable pricing standard imposed by the Dodd–Frank Act, this article considers whether residential real estate appraisers are able to obtain differentiation premiums for their services. Regression models estimated using data from the Commonwealth of Virginia offer some evidence that professional certifications and the complexity of an appraisal task are positively associated with fee levels in this type of regulatory environment. However, differentiation premiums appear more difficult to obtain across geographies and when an appraisal is procured by an appraisal management company. The findings suggest appraisers can differentiate themselves from competitors, but also that policymakers should be mindful of the potential for commodification on the residential appraisal industry in select market settings. Since appraisals are a critical component of the mortgage underwriting process, and the majority of housing transactions utilize mortgage debt, developing new understanding of how policies influence appraisers and how the appraisal process makes an important contribution to the housing policy literature. 相似文献
