Police departments across the United States are now integrating new visual monitoring technology (e.g. unmanned aerial vehicles [UAVs or ‘drones’], body cameras) into routine police practices. Despite their potential use in multiple areas of proactive and reactive policing, public attitudes toward police use of UAVs, and visual monitoring technology overall, is mixed. As an extension of previous research, the current study uses a national survey to assess how well individuals’ perceptions about police legitimacy, effectiveness, and other criminal justice attitudes predict the level of public receptivity and opposition toward police UAV use in various contexts. The implications of these findings for public policy and law enforcement practices are discussed.  相似文献

Identification of 6-acetylmorphine, a specific metabolite of heroin, is considered to be definitive evidence of heroin use. Although 6-acetylmorphine has been identified in oral fluid following controlled heroin administration, no prevalence data is available for oral fluid specimens collected in the workplace. We evaluated the prevalence of positive test results for 6-acetylmorphine in 77,218 oral fluid specimens collected over a 10-month period (January-October 2001) from private workplace testing programs. Specimens were analyzed by Intercept immunoassay (cutoff concentration=30 ng/ml) and confirmed by GC-MS-MS (cutoff concentrations=30 ng/ml for morphine and codeine, and 3 ng/ml for 6-acetylmorphine). Only morphine-positive oral fluid specimens were tested by GC-MS-MS for 6-acetylmorphine. A total of 48 confirmed positive morphine results were identified. An additional 107 specimens were confirmed for codeine only. Of the 48 morphine-positive specimens, 32 (66.7%) specimens were positive for 6-acetylmorphine. Mean concentrations (+/-S.E.M.) of morphine, 6-acetylmorphine and codeine in the 32 specimens were 755+/-201, 416+/-168 and 196+/-36 ng/ml, respectively. Concentrations of 6-acetylmorphine in oral fluid ranged from 3 to 4095 ng/ml. The mean ratio (+/-S.E.M.) of 6-acetylmorphine/morphine was 0.33+/-0.06. It is suggested that, based on controlled dose studies of heroin administration, ratios >1 of 6-acetylmorphine/morphine in oral fluid are consistent with heroin use within the last hour before specimen collection. The confirmation of 6-acetylmorphine in 66.7% of morphine-positive oral fluid specimens indicates that oral fluid testing for opioids may offer advantages over urine in workplace drug testing programs and in testing drugged drivers for recent heroin use.  相似文献

Over a lengthy period of time, the author has acted as an expert witness for people seeking asylum in the United States from West Africa. The author has noted changes in the manner in which courts have treated these asylum seekers from the relatively easy process of the Clinton years to the much more hostile culture of the Bush ones. The author wishes to discuss the manner in which an anthropologist can use knowledge about the culture of the person seeking asylum and that of the political party in power to translate the motives of the asylum seeker in a favorable light. The author provides a number of examples of this process and of the changing culture of political administrations.  相似文献

The catalytic rates of hydrolysis of lorazepam-glucuronide, oxazepam-glucuronide, and temazepam-glucuronide when catalyzed by E. Coli. beta-glucuronidase both in phosphate buffer and buffered drug-free urine were compared as well as the pH dependence of enzyme activity. In 50 mM phosphate buffer pH 6.4, lorazepam-glucuronide has the highest turnover rate of 3.7 s(-1) with an associated Km of about 100 microM, followed by oxazepam-glucuronide, which has a turnover rate of 2.4 s(-1) with an associated Km of 60 microM. Temazepam-glucuronide has the lowest rate of 0.94 s(-1) with an associated Km of 34 microM. In buffered drug-free urine, a similar trend was observed. In addition, an optimal pH for beta-glucuronidase was determined to be between 6 and 7 when the enzyme hydrolyzes the benzodiazepine conjugates in buffered drug-free urine. Effects of temperature and incubation time were also examined. It can be concluded that the electron donating or withdrawing of the individual benzodiazepine structure may play an important role in the reactivity of the lorazepam-glucuronide, oxazepam-glucuronide and temazepam-glucuronide catalyzed by beta-glucuronidase. This is consistent with other observations made for monosubstituted phenyl-beta-glucuronides by Wang et al. (1).  相似文献
