We present two cases in which the ethanol concentration in blood samples taken after death continued to increase in the absence of any remarkable increase in n-propanol concentration. Species of bacteria and yeasts, including Candida albicans were isolated from these samples. We then examined whether C. albicans, the most common yeast in the general environment, was able to produce ethanol in human blood stored at room temperature. Ethanol production increased as the glucose concentration increased, indicating that C. albicans produced ethanol from the glucose. Our results also suggested that C. albicans produced ethanol more easily in blood diluted by intravenous infusions that included glucose than in undiluted blood. These findings are useful for the evaluation of postmortem ethanol production in subjects whose blood has been diluted by infusions with glucose. Furthermore, there was no quantitative relationship between the amount of n-propanol detected and the amount of ethanol production: n-propanol appears to be an unreliable index of putrefaction and postmortem ethanol production by C. albicans. It is possible for the blood ethanol level to be high and n-propanol not to be detected, even if the subject has not been drinking alcohol. We reconfirmed the necessity of immediately adding sodium fluoride to samples for ethanol analysis to prevent postmortem ethanol production.  相似文献

An autopsy was conducted on a male showing leather-like skin damage, revealing the cause of death to be an injury to the head. Thinner was found scattered around the scene of death, and stomach and intestine contents smelled strongly of solvent. Toxicological analysis was conducted to determine whether or not the solvent was of a lethal level. Using gas chromatography, peaks of toluene, xylene, and ethylbenzene were detected in the blood and gastric contents. No toluene was detected in the urine, and therefore it was concluded that the decedent died of a severe head injury shortly after solvent ingestion. In the literature, toluene concentrations in blood and lung samples were determined as both fatal and non-fatal but clear differences in the fatality of toluene in solid organ samples, namely, the brain, liver and kidneys were shown. The brain is especially useful in postmortem analysis. In this case, the concentration of toluene in the brain was 20.0 microl/g, which was considered as a non-lethal level.  相似文献

Six multiplex PCR systems using single‐base extension reactions to analyze 46 mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)‐coding region single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that define 42 haplogroups, that is, 24 major mtDNA haplogroups and 18 subclades, were devised. To improve the usefulness of the established systems for the analysis of degraded DNA samples, novel primers to render amplicons with sizes <150 bp were designed. By applying these systems to 214 Japanese individuals, 24 different haplogroups (power of discrimination = 93.4%) were found. To assess the effectiveness of our systems in grouping degraded DNA, an ancient bone sample of a Jomon skeleton was analyzed and then classified as haplogroup N9b. We conclude that the present systems are powerful screening tools for major haplogroups of mtDNA in addition to the prevalent subhaplogroups in the Japanese population and that these systems are capable of analyzing highly degraded DNA samples in forensic studies.  相似文献

The rudimentary horn is a rare developmental anomaly of the Müllerian duct. Ectopic pregnancy in the rudimentary horn is estimated to occur in one out of 76,000–150,000 pregnancies. A 30-year-old primigravida suddenly collapsed after 3 days of continuous abdominal pain. Emergency laparotomy revealed a massive intraperitoneal hemorrhage and fetal demise. The growth of the fetus after 19 weeks of gestation is believed to have caused the rudimentary horn rupture, thereby rapidly leading to hemorrhagic shock in the mother and ischemic death in the fetus. This is the first autopsy report on maternal death due to the rudimentary horn or other Müllerian duct anomalies, which emphasizes the need for forensic pathologists to consider this condition as a possible cause of unexpected death in fertile women. In addition, it is very important for clinicians to detect Müllerian duct anomalies by sonography during routine obstetric examinations, and promptly diagnose anomaly related ectopic pregnancies in women displaying symptoms of an acute abdomen, intraperitoneal hemorrhage, or shock in the emergency practice.  相似文献

We assessed the gas dispersal potential of bedding articles used by 14 infants diagnosed with sudden unexpected infant death at autopsy. Of these cases, eight exhibited FiCO2 values greater than 10% within 2.5 min, six of which were found prone and two supine. The results demonstrated that these eight beddings had a high rebreathing potential if they covered the babies’ faces. We did not, however, take into account in our model the large tissue stores of CO2. As some bicarbonate pools will delay or suppress the increase of FiCO2, the time–FiCO2 graphs of this study are not true for living infants. This model, however, demonstrated the potential gas dispersal ability of bedding. The higher the FiCO2 values, the more dangerous the situation for rebreathing infants. In addition, FiO2 in the potential space around the model's face can be estimated mathematically using FiCO2 values. The FiO2 graph pattern for each bedding item corresponded roughly to the inverse of the FiCO2 time course. The FiO2 of the above eight cases decreased by 8.5% within 2.5 min. Recent studies using living infants placed prone to sleep reported that some babies exhibited larger decreases in FiO2 than increases observed in FiCO2. While the decrease of FiO2 in our model is still theoretical, CO2 accumulation and O2 deprivation are closely related. If a striking O2 deficiency occurs in a short period, babies can lose consciousness before an arousal response is evoked and all infants could be influenced by the poor gas dispersal of bedding; the main cause of sudden death in infancy would thus be asphyxia. When the bedding is soft, the potential for trapping CO2 seems to be high; however, it is impossible to assess it by appearance alone. We sought to provide some objective indices for the assessment of respiratory compromise in relation to bedding using our model. When a baby is found unresponsive with his/her face covered with poor gas dispersal bedding, we should consider the possibility of asphyxia.  相似文献

An 8-month-old female baby was found collapsed in the prone position 30 min after being positioned under soft-bedding. She was taken to the emergency room with cardiopulmonary arrest. Her heartbeat was recovered after resuscitation and continued for 20 h under artificial respiration, at which point the child died. At autopsy, the child showed no significant pathological abnormalities apart from a thyroglossal duct cyst of 2.0 cm diameter, therefore, it seemed that the cyst, which was close to the epiglottis, had caused asphyxia through airways occlusion. However, the child had shown no respiratory problems before death, and the risk of airway occlusion as a result of lingual cysts is more likely in a supine rather than a prone position. A small amount of evidence suggested that the child died as a result of suffocation from being covered by soft-bedding, which could have caused fatal asphyxia; it is also possible that a hypoxic state induced by airway obstruction might have been enhanced by being covered with bedding. It seemed reasonable to assume that death was caused by a combination of the lingual thyroglossal duct cysts and asphyxia caused by being covered in bedding, though the main factor appeared to be the large cyst.  相似文献

Haplotypes and allele frequencies of 12 Y-STRs were examined in a population sample of 381 Japanese male volunteers. A total of 315 haplotypes were identified, of which 288 haplotypes were unique, and 18, three, three, two, one and one were found in two, three, four, five, eight and 18 individuals, respectively.
