Innovative handheld technologies are changing the possibilities for public health interventions. The present research describes a preliminary examination of the iPhone? when used as an assessment tool and an enhancement to an evidence-based, in-home child safety intervention. Three families with young children received an augmented version of the Safety module of SafeCare, a home-visiting child maltreatment prevention program. Specifically, parents were trained to use an iPhone to video rooms in their homes, as well as communicate feedback, logistics, and safety content between the home visitor and parent. The effectiveness of iPhone and video was examined using a multiple baseline design across in-home settings replicated across families. Home hazards were reduced dramatically across rooms and across participants. Face-to-face time of the home visitor was progressively reduced and replaced by video data collection. These data suggest smartphones are promising for data collection and for augmenting face-to-face interactions. Implications for reducing costs as smartphones become increasingly ubiquitous and for engaging and retaining participants are discussed.  相似文献

This paper is based on the premise that corrupt uses of public, civic networks ostensibly built and legitimated for their altruistic purposes can be a source of network subversion and corruption. Open, public, civic networks of South Korea seem to be systemic and organizational facilitators of criminality instead of assumptions of criminality being related only to closed, criminal cultures or anomie. We test whether increasing participation in the major social networks of Korean civic life – networks based on geography (common ancestral hometown), family (extended kinship), and education (alumni) – are associated with increasing penchants for self-admitted criminal collusion, in this case, bribery. We argue that due to relational association or within-network favoritism the increase in multiple networks per individual generates increasing social capital of access, information, and trust which may be subverted toward some form of private criminal collusion.  相似文献

Abstract

A legislature’s ability to engage in oversight of the executive is believed to derive largely from its committee system. For example, powerful parliamentary committees are considered a necessary condition for the legislature to help police policy compromises between parties in multiparty government. But can other parliamentary instruments perform this role? This article suggests parliamentary questions as an alternative parliamentary vehicle for coalition parties to monitor their partners. Questions force ministers to reveal information concerning their legislative and extra-legislative activities, providing coalition members unique insights into their partners’ behaviour. In order to test our argument, we build and analyse a new dataset of parliamentary questions in the British House of Commons covering the 2010?2015 coalition. As expected, government MPs ask more questions as the divisiveness of a policy area increases. Legislatures conventionally considered weak due to the lack of strong committees may nevertheless play an important oversight role through other parliamentary devices, including helping to police the implementation of coalition agreements.  相似文献

Public service ethics differ from the ethical codes of most professions in that they stress external accountability. Ethical codes of private sector professions create a sense of responsibility to the profession and help undergird professional autonomy. Public service ethics emphasize public responsibility and help create public accountability. By increasing the PCR amplification regime to 34 cycles, we have demonstrated that it is possible routinely to analyse <100 pg DNA. The success rate was not improved (without impairing quality) by increasing cycle number further. Compared to amplification of 1 ng DNA at 28 cycles, it was shown that increased imbalance of heterozygotes occurred, along with an increase in the size (peak area) of stutters. The analysis of mixtures by peak area measurement becomes increasingly difficult as the sample size is reduced. Laboratory-based contamination cannot be completely avoided, even when analysis is carried out under stringent conditions of cleanliness. A set of guidelines that utilises duplication of results to interpret profiles originating from picogram levels of DNA is introduced. We demonstrate that the duplication guideline is robust by applying a statistical theory that models three key parameters - namely the incidence of allele drop-out, laboratory contamination and stutter. The advantage of the model is that the critical levels for each parameter can be calculated. This information may be used (for example) to determine levels of contamination that can be tolerated within the strategy employed. In addition we demonstrate that interpreting one banded loci, where allele dropout could have occurred, using LR=1/2f(a) was conservative provided that the band was low in peak area. Furthermore, we demonstrate that an apparent mis-match between crime-stain and a suspect DNA profile does not necessarily result in an exclusion. The method used is complex, yet can be converted into an expert system. We envisage this to be the next step.  相似文献
