5-(4-Nitrophenyl)-2,4-pentadien-1-al (NPPD) used as a tracer by nonscientists at a simulated crime scene

5-(4-Nitrophenyl)-2,4-pentadien-1-al (NPPD) was used as a tracer by nonscientists at a simulated crime scene. A card with both a plastic-coated smooth surface and a porous cellulose matrix paper surface was coated with a methanol solution containing 0.5mg/mL of NPPD. The card was touched with bare fingers and fingers covered by a cotton glove. A color-change protocol was then used to detect the presence of NPPD. The bare fingers or the fingers of gloves were swabbed with a cotton swab, or the parts of the glove that had touched the card were cut out. The swabs or the cloth pieces were dipped in methanol, a 0.1% methanol solution of naphthoresorcinol was added, and then concentrated hydrochloric acid was added. The observation of a red color at this point indicated a positive test. NPPD was easily observed in the experiments involving bare fingers, but no color change was observed from the swabbing of the cotton glove. However, when the cloth pieces cut from the fingers of the glove were subjected to the test, the red color was observed. In an attempt to enhance the sensitivity of the test, the volumes of the reagent solutions were reduced, but no improvement in sensitivity was obtained.     

A new 39-plex analysis method for SNPs including 15 blood group loci

A novel 39-plex typing system for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) has been developed. This multiplex approach has the advantage of being able to type 38 autosomal SNPs and one sex-discriminating base exchange site on the X and Y chromosomes rapidly and simultaneously. The SNP loci on the autosomes, which we examined, contain 15 loci distributed on blood type genes: three on RhCE, two each on Km and Gc, and one each on Duffy, AcP1, Tf, MN, GPT, EsD, PI, and Kidd genes. Thirty-seven genomic DNA fragments containing a total of 38 SNPs and one sex-discriminating site were amplified in one multiplex PCR reaction. Following the reaction, single nucleotide primer extension reaction was performed by dividing these SNP loci into five groups. The SNP type of each of the 39 loci was determined at one time by capillary electrophoresis using the newly designed multi-injection method. The combined PD (power of discrimination) of this typing system was (1-1.1) x 10(-14), and the MEC (mean exclusion chance) was 0.9990. We applied this system to forensic cases, including 16 paternity testing cases (13 non-exclusion and three exclusion cases) and one personal identification case. For the paternity testing cases, the highest Essen-M?ller's W-value was 0.9999995. The pM (matching probability) of the personal identification case was 2.22 x 10(-17). These data showed that this system was an excellent tool for use in forensic cases of paternity testing and personal identification.     

DPRK Troop Dispatches and Military Support in the Middle East: Change from Military Support to Arms Trade in the 1970s

The DPRK now trades in arms with the Middle East. However, in the October War (1973) the DPRK first began military cooperation with the Middle East by sending troops and providing unrequited military support. This switch was made to win support within the UN from these Middle Eastern countries, and so to counteract the US presence in the UN. Failing this, the DPRK withdrew from the UN in 1976. The DPRK then turned to arms trading both to build up its foreign currency reserves and to help liberate developing countries from US control.     

An Autopsy Case in Which Self‐Bloodletting Via a Cervical Blood Access Led to a Fatal Outcome*

Abstract: A 48‐year‐old woman was found dead on a chair in her living room. She had received dialysis every day because of chronic renal failure for the past 15 years. On a table beside her, there was a mirror and 10‐mL syringe on a napkin. A stopper was out of place in a portion of a three‐way blood access tube established in the right cervical region, and blood coagulation was noted in the lumen. There was a bloodstained measuring cup on the floor. Autopsy findings included a large number of shunt traces in the bilateral infraclavicular fossae and upper limbs, as well as the cervical blood access terminal reaching the right atrium via the internal jugular vein to superior vena cava. Various organs showed anemia. Neither a fatal lesion nor injury was noted in the main organs. Therefore, this patient may have committed suicide by self‐bloodletting via a cervical blood access.     

Complement component C3a or C3a desArg as a new marker for estimation of local vital reactions in incised skin wounds.

The anaphylatoxin C3a or its desArg form (C3a/desArg) generated during complement activation could be detected in the vicinity of incised skin wounds of guinea pigs using immunoblotting methods. The C3a/desArg peptides were detectable immediately after injury in local sites up to 3 mm from the wound edge. In subsequent determinations of up to at least 3-day-old antemortem wounds, the maximum concentration of these peptides was largely localized up to 6 mm from the wound edge at 2 h after injury. In postmortem wounds, however, these peptides were undetectable. When they were released in antemortem wounded tissues they could be detected up to 1 day at 22 degrees C after death. These results suggest that the detection of C3a/desArg in wounds using immunoblotting methods can be useful for distinguishing ante- from postmortem wounds.     

The Price is Light: Socializing the Cost of Wildfires in California

Abstract

The effects of climate change have caused catastrophic wildfires in California to become perennial occurrences, claiming numerous lives and contributing to billions of dollars in property damages. As a result, California’s existing capacity to absorb an ever-growing financial burden is under immense strain. This article proposes mitigating and spreading these costs across the government, private utility companies, and residents alike. To effectuate this goal, this article recommends three key reforms: re-interpreting tort liability law for private utility companies, establishing a state-backed reinsurance program to assist victims of wildfire damage, and re-thinking the continuing expansion of human development in fire-prone regions.     

Intimate Partner Violence Against Women: Is Women Empowerment a Reducing Factor? A Study from a National Bangladeshi Sample

This article explores how women empowerment affects Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) in Bangladesh using a cross-sectional investigation of currently married women (n = 4,181) sampled via the Bangladesh Demographic Health Survey (BDHS), 2007. About one-fourth (24%) of currently married Bangladeshi women experienced both physical and/or sexual IPV in the past year. Prevalence of physical and sexual violence was 19.4% and 10.5%, respectively. Younger generation (age 15–24), illiterate, rural, and the poorest household wealth categorized women were much victimized. Current employment status predicted intimate partner violence. Household decision-making pattern also emerged as a predictor of IPV. Likelihood of all forms of IPV increases with increase of number of participation in household decision-making. Promoting women empowerment in the household without men’s support may put women at more risk of IPV.

以二战为分水岭,日本战前的中国学研究在战后被日本学界视为战争的幕后推手而彻底抛弃,战后的研究是在批判东洋史研究的基础上重新开始的一门新学问。从源流来看,日本的当代中国学研究有东洋史和区域研究两个系列四个学派;从思考框架来看,存在回归传统、"中国就是中国"、普通的近代化、东亚型四种模式。与欧美国家相比,日本的中国学研究在中国的近现代历史和经济研究领域最为活跃,引领世界前沿。面对当前日本中国学研究停滞不前的状况,鉴于中国发展的实际,三元结构论、制度化、相对化可作为推进研究的新范式。
