Stopping the war: The Eisenhower administration and the search for an armistice in Korea

This article examines the Eisenhower Administration's approach to ending the Korean War. It seeks in particular to assess the evidence suggesting that the United States was considering using atomic weapons to compel Communist acquiescence to its armistice terms.     

The mirror's use in suicide

Eleven suicides in which the victim took his or her life while looking into a mirror are presented. The psychoanalytic implications of this extreme form of narcissism are discussed. Investigators should have a high index of suspicion of suicide in cases where a dead body is positioned in front of or near a mirror.     

Fatal air embolism during renal dialysis

Air embolism during renal dialysis is extremely rare because of the safeguards built into the apparatus and procedures currently used. This case is attributable to improper techniques used with venous access outside the monitored system.On completion of dialysis and disconnect from the machine and its safeguards, this patient had leg cramps. This common postdialysis complaint is routinely treated with intravenous saline from a fresh bag hung outside the machine for this purpose. Unfortunately, a previously used bag had not been replaced and soon ran empty after being connected to the patient's venous access. It was replaced hurriedly with a new bag without first bleeding the system of air.The patient collapsed, was transported to a hospital, and died 72 hours later without regaining consciousness. The diagnosis was confirmed by radiological and pathological examinations.The various mechanisms and pathways of venous to material transit are discussed.     

Homicide in Alabama: an analysis of urban, suburban and rural murders in the Deep South

Eleven hundred forty-four (1144) homicides occurring in Alabama, U.S.A. during a 2-year period are presented and analyzed according to the demographic parameters of the victims, location in urban, suburban, or rural community, type of homicide based on a medical examiner's classification, presence of drugs, weapon employed and other factors. Urban dwellers, Blacks and males are found to be at high risk. Alcohol is much more prevalent than other drugs in homicide victims. Although the handgun is the weapon most commonly used throughout the state, in the rural regions the longgun is used almost as often. The difficulty of making valid comparisons with other homicide studies is discussed and the establishment of a uniform classification of homicides urged.     

Earlobe creases and coronary atherosclerosis. The view from forensic pathology

In several clinical studies, the diagonal earlobe crease has been statistically related to the presence of ischemic heart disease. Only one study of a relatively small number of hospitalized patients attempts to relate the earlobe crease with amount of stenotic coronary atherosclerosis demonstrated at necropsy. We examined the relationship between the degree of coronary atherosclerosis and the presence of a diagonal earlobe crease in 800 consecutive autopsies performed for medicolegal reasons and thus including a wide spectrum of subjects. Statistical analysis by the chi 2 test demonstrated a positive correlation (p less than 0.01) between the presence of the diagonal earlobe crease and obstructive coronary atherosclerosis narrowing on at least one major coronary artery greater than 75%. We conclude that the autopsy findings support the clinical observations that the diagonal earlobe crease is a cutaneous sign of obstructive coronary atherosclerosis and that the sign should be used accordingly.     

Disseminated granulomatosis through a patent foramen ovale in an intravenous drug user with pulmonary hypertension

Disseminated granulomatosis is a well-documented complication of intravenous narcotism. We present here an interesting case in which this complication was caused by a right-to-left shunt (following intravenous injection of medicinal tablets intended for oral use) through a patent foramen ovale resulting from pulmonary hypertension due to angiothrombosis.
