An Analysis on Transformational Diplomacy and its Impacts on Regional Relations: a Case Study in Indonesia

In a speech at Georgetown University early 2006,Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice announced a new approach that the United States was going to shift its traditional diplomacy.The new thinking has been entitled "Transformational Diplomacy".In fact,this new way of US diplomacy had been practiced on trial in Indonesia before for almost two years already.This paper firstly touches on the core thinking and special features of the transformational diplomacy,and then analyses a case of the US practice of this diplomacy in Medan,a remote Indonesian city.From the choice of its location,its scale,staffing and the contents and ways of its work,one can see the outline of the functioning of the transformational diplomacy and how it is going to expand into other areas in Asia.The US has placed great expectations on its transformational diplomacy in Asia,which will surely have important impacts on the regional affairs.
