The Influence of Savigny on the Anglo- American Law in the 19th Century

Being one of the greatest German jurists, Savigny's theory has spread over not only the continental countries but also the Anglo- America countries through the English translation of his works. While tracing back to the birth of the English historical law school, America's codification controversy after the America Civil War, the legal education reform in both England and America in the late 19th century and the judicial practice in the United States before 1900, one can easily sense Savigny's influences, which are far deeper than those of other continental scholars. There are many reasons for the considerable influences of Savigy; for example, his individual reputation, his eminent status in German society, and the rise of the historical view of law. But the most important one is the tradition of the legal cultures' communication between the continental countries and the Anglo- America countries.
