The Protestant Ethic and the Capitalist Market Economy

The existence of any social economic system must be based on its peculiar cultural background. The rise of the market economy is an interactive process involving such factors as materials and spirits. In general, the extensive and profound changes caused by it in social life promoted the progress of the society. However, such progress was not caused solely by economic factors. Max Weber's exposition about the Protestant ethic is regarded as classic of the Western spiritual cultures and economic relationships. As China has chosen the socialist market economy, the enlightenment it gives us is that we must pay full attention to the tremendous role played by the spiritual cultures, and to the specific historic significance of the role.
