Analysis of the Political Situation in Myanmar

A crackdown on the coup staged by Ne Win's relatives is good news to many people, but does little for democracy. Ne Win's relatives told the interrogators they made their plans because they had lost money due to the government's economic policy, and because they no longer enjoyed special privileges. Few believe those arrested were actually mounting a coup. The most likely motive is that the junta itself has been preparing for a post-Ne Win era. It is a very clever move to try to break up Ne Win's family. They don't want another force to appear.
