Demographic trends in Latvia

A review of recent demographic trends in Latvia is presented based on a variety of published sources. The impact of the two world wars on the population of Latvia is first examined. Consideration is then given to sex distribution, age distribution, rural-urban residence, nuptiality, and birth and death rates. Particular attention is paid to migration to Latvia from elsewhere in the USSR and to the ethnic balance of the population.
