THE FINAL BULLET IN THE BODY OF THE MORE GUNS, LESS CRIME HYPOTHESIS
Authors:JOHN J DONOHUE III
Institution:John J. Donohue III, the William H. Neukom Professor of Law at Stanford Law School, is an empirical economist/lawyer who has used large-scale statistical studies to analyze public policy issues ranging from employment discrimination to school funding to crime control. He has extensively researched the impact of laws permitting the carrying of concealed handguns and co-authored (with University of Chicago economist Steven Levitt) some work proposing a new explanation for the dramatic drop in crime experienced in the 1990s-that unwanted children tend to be at much higher risk of engaging in criminal activity, and the legalization of abortion sharply reduced the number of unwanted births. Professor Donohue received a JD from Harvard, and a Ph.D in economics from Yale.
