CASS Social Sciences Forum "The Changing Dynamics of International Economy: The Alternative for China and Latin America and the Caribbean" held in Beijing

Under the theme of "The Changing Dynamics of International Economy: The Alternative for China and Latin America and the Caribbean",the CASS Social Sciences Forum was held in Beijing on May 8,2012,which was sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences(CASS) and jointly organized by the Institute of Latin American Studies(ILAS),CASS,and the CAF-Development Bank of Latin America with the support of the Export-Import Bank of China.The forum is the only annual international academic symposium held in China to discuss the situation in Latin America and the Caribbean(LAC).Prof.Cheng Siwei(Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Ninth & Tenth National People’s Congress of China and Chairman of the Association of China-Latin American Friendship),Mr.Enrique Garcia(President of CAF),Mr.Gao Quanli(Vice President of CASS),Mr.Yu Hongjun(Vice Minister of the International Department under the CPC Central Committee),Mr.Liu Shijin(Vice President of the Development Research Center of the State Council),Mr.Mario Pezzini(Director of the OECD Development Centre) and Mr.Li Baorong(Deputy Director of the Department of Latin American and the Caribbean Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) attended and addressed the opening ceremony which was moderated by Prof.Zheng Bingwen(Director General of ILAS).They spoke highly of the Chinese-LAC cooperation in political,economic,diplomatic and social realms and stressed that a new stage of comprehensive cooperation had come.Present at the meeting also included those from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China,the International Department under the CPC Central Committee,the National Development and Reform Commission,Latin American and the Caribbean Embassies in Beijing,and local universities and institutes.The forum was divided into four sessions.The first session focused on the changing dynamics of international economy;the second session,promoting access to financial services in Latin America;the third session,the middle-income trap and the challenges from industrial transformation;and the forth session,transforming the State for Development.The forum also served as an international platform distributing academic publications on LAC affairs.The OECD Development Centre and the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean jointly released their annual report entitled "Latin American Economic Outlook 2012: Transforming the State for Development"(Chinese Edition).The CAF-Development Bank of Latin America distributed its 2012 economic and development report entitled "Financial Services for Development: Promoting Access in Latin America"(Chinese Edition).The ILAS released its special report entitled "The Middle-Income Trap: The Case Study of Latin America" which was edited by Prof.Zheng Bingwen.In addition,the ILAS took advantage of the opportunity announcing the Yellow Book of Latin America and the Caribbean(2011-2012),which presented the changes in LAC in 2011 and predicted tentatively the perspective of the region in 2012.
